We will be reviewing the short  "i" in the initial position in words.  Children will be introduced to the short "i" sound in the medial position in words.  A new reading book comes home each Tuesday in your child's folder.  Please take a few minutes to listen to your child read.  The books must be returned on Wednesday.  We have been using the computer to reinforce many of the skills we are working on in kindergarten. The children enjoy writing their own sentences, so encourage the students to write someone a letter.
*We are continuing our unit on money, but many the students still need practice.  Students should be able to identify a penny, a nickel, and a dime.  They should be able to tell you how many cents each coin is worth.
*Please label items of clothing or anything you allow your child to bring to school.  We do our best to help them keep up with their belongings, but help us by labeling everything.

*The children are very excited about concluding the alphabet and the book.  We will be finished with this book very soon.  The children are being introduced to many sight words.  Our word for this week is "we".  The new sight words have been listed in my letter to parents each week.  Please take a few minutes to go over them each night.  During this time, we will be reviewing letter recognition and beginning consonant sounds as I introduce middle and ending sounds.   Many students are doing very well at blending and sounding new words out. If your child is having some trouble with these skills, I will continue to work with them in class, but it is important for you to work with them at home.   Please take time each Tuesday night to listen to your child read the books in their folder.  We need to work together as a team to help your child be successful in school.  Our letter for the week is Yy.  We are working on money.  Some students  are experiencing difficulty with this unit.

Dear Parents,
*Parent - Teacher conferences are coming up very soon.   I have enclosed a schedule for conferences.  If the time is not good for you, I can meet before school almost any morning.  If you have not returned field trip money, please do so as soon as possible.  I appreciate your  promptness in returning field trip money, permission slips, and conference slips.  It is so important for us to work together as a team.
*Please help your child remember his/her library book on Thursdays.  It is very hard on some children not to be able to check out a book.  I hope you are taking time to read to your child at least 15 minutes each day.   Don't forget to record the books you read to your child this month.
*This week, we will be reviewing and completing individual evaluations.  Our letter for the week is Gg.  We are discussing Johnny Appleseed.   In math, we will begin working with numbers 0-5.  The students are continuing to work on the farm and forest unit.  Each child has presented  a report on one farm animal.  Students  gave three facts about a farm animal and draw a picture of the animal.
*Finally, many thanks to all the parents who helped raise $500.00 for the kindergarten classroom.  Our basket sold for $250.  It was doubled because we had the most people present at the auction.  I want to give a very special thank you to the room mothers.

The students will be doing farm animal reports in class.  Ask your student which animal they have chosen.  Have your child  tell you three facts they have learned about that animal.  This is a class project, not homework. We will continue to study farm and forest animals.  In math, we will complete chapter 2 this week.   There are a few students who have not said their address and phone number for me.
*The school auction is this Saturday night.  I would like to thank the homeroom mothers and parents for putting together our basket. If you have not sent in your donation, please do so soon.  Please make plans to attend.
*We need drivers for all our field trips or we can not go.  Drivers must take the Child Protection Class.  If you were not able to attend our class, there is one being offered at Catholic High School.  Please consider taking the class before our first field trip in October.

Dear Parents,
*This week, we will be reviewing and completing individual evaluations.  There are a few children having problems identifying some of the letters.  A great way to practice identification is to ask them to circle all  the "Dd's" on a page in the newspaper.  Try playing "I Spy" games in the car as you travel to and from school.  Our letter for the week is Ee.   We will continue to work on recognizing, writing, and associating the sounds with the consonants and vowels in the initial position of  words.  We are working on patterns in math. The children are working on a farmand animal unit.
*The P.T.O. Auction is in less than two weeks.  It is wonderful way to help our class. The class with the most people present will receive twice the amount their basket sells for at the auction.   I have been able to purchase a Log cabin, a slide, a puppet stage, a scanner,  a water-table and a computer for the kindergarten room with the basket money from past years.  It is not too late to get a ticket!  Your presence will help our class, plus it is a very nice evening out.
*Starting October 1st please keep track of the minutes your child reads with you.  My class goal for this year is 15 minutes a night, five nights a week. Calendars to record the reading minutes will come home next week. Every child who turns in a calendar of at least 15 minutes a night, 5 nights a week will be able to shop in Mrs. Redden's Store and get a free Pizza Hut individual pizza coupon on October 31st.  Do not forget to ask questions about the main characters, the sequence of the story, and what the story was about. Remember calendars must be turn in by October 31st.

Dear Parents,
*The Kindergarten Class is scheduled for two field trips.  We would like to collect the money for these to hold our reservations.  American Village is November 13th and Winnie the Pooh, at ASF, is January 23rd.  Student tickets for both trips will cost a total $18.00.  Parents tickets for ASF are $16.00 each. The American Village tickets are $8.00 for each adult.  We would like to have all money collected by September 21st.
*The children did an excellent job reciting their nursery rhymes.   If your child did not recite their nursery rhyme for me, please continue to work with them.  Every student enjoyed preparing and eating our Community Fruit Salad.  Thank you for sending in the fruit.    Our letter of the week is Dd.  We are working on sorting and classifying, but I suggest that you play games using a group of objects and have your child decide what does not belong to the group. In math this week, our study of patterns will begin. Please continue to work with your child on their address and phone number.  Do not forget to look for pictures in magazines of things beginning with "d".
*Be sure to make plans to attend the O.L.Q.M. Auction.  It is a wonderful night out, even if you do not bid on any items.  If we have the most people present, the kindergarten class will receive extra money for their classroom.   Invite friends and family to attend and make sure they sign the kindergarten sign-in sheet.  Don't forget to send in items for our auction basket.

Dear Parents,
*Our letter for this week is Bb.  Please help your child find pictures in magazines for our class B poster.  Friday will be Bear Day in kindergarten.  Please allow your child to bring a favorite bear.  It must fit in their backpack.  In math, we will be sorting and classifying by color, shape, and size.  Our 5 caterpillars should arrive this week.  Ask your student about our class octopus.
*Friday,September 7, will be  our first day to check out  library books.  Library books must be returned on the following Thursday.  Please help your child remember their book.  It is not much fun to visit the library and not be allowed to check out a book because you did not return a book.
*  Every parent that plans to drive on a field trip must complete the Child Protection Class and the driver information forms.  Parents who drove on field trips last year are required to have completed new driver information forms.   We always need drivers, so please help out on at least one of our field trips.  Please return the driver forms as soon as possible.
*Our snack schedule was enclosed in last week's folder.  Parents do not have to furnish drinks or paper products.  Our room mothers are already doing a great job, but they will need your help.  Please be on the look out for a note from them concerning our class basket for the live auction.  Be sure to make plans to attend the Eighth Annual Auction on September 29.  Over the past seven years, I have been able to purchase for the kindergarten class:   two computers, a scanner, a puppet stage, and the log cabin for our playground.  If we have the highest percentage of parents and friends present the night of the auction, the PTO will double the amount of money our basket brings.
