I will leave this information up in case some have not read it from previous weeks. If any parent would like to help with real life examples of how mathematics is used in your area of expertise just email me. We would love to have you join our class and share your knowledge. This will create a love for learning!!!!!!!!
Good evening parents! Your child has just been a joy to work with at Ellis Middle School. Please wish our basketball team well! They have done such an outstanding job, and a number of my students are cheerleaders or team members. I am very proud of them!!! They are outstanding leaders on and off the court!!!!
Here are the lessons since the last update. Hopefully, since we have the link worked out that this site will now be easier for you to access. Last Wednesday, the regular eighth grade math classes (2nd, 3rd, and 7th periods) reviewed for Chapter 4 test on the board. This was alot of fun for the students, and they learned alot. Fourth period (advanced math) reviewed for Chapter 5 as well. On Thursday, the test was given for all classes except for seventh period due to a scheduled pep rally. Seventh period took their test over Chapter 4 on Friday. On Friday, makeup tests were given, and we began Chapter 5 (Geometry). They are learning basic terms, identifying, and measuring angles. A supply list was given earlier in the week to all of my classes. This is mandatory so that we can have interesting math lessons. The folder will count as a grade. Below you will see the mandatory supply list as well as the grading percentages. Friday, second and third periods were assigned page 224 (1-32) in their math textbook.
The advanced class worked on challenge exercises pg 284(25-29), pg.288 (27-32), and pg. 293(30-33)(34-36).
During math class, we always start with a basic quiz review each day to get ready for the TCAP (adding, subtracting, fractions, decimals, and percents). We check this together, and this assignment is placed in the folder. Then we work out of our TCAP review books.
We are also doing video field trips which shows how math is applied in the real world and different occupations that uses mathematics. Who knows? Maybe your child will find an occupation that he or she would like to do when he or she grows up. Today, 1/22/08, we setup our notebook, went over class rules,
the ticket system, and worked on 5-2 (regular math)using our colored pencils. In advanced math, the class divided up into collaborative groups preparing to present challange problems.
Exploratory class is during fifth period. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we go to the Plato Lab. All other days is study hall time. Today 1/22/08, we went to Plato and finished the assessments. After this, we started our reading lessons.
Literature class is during sixth period. Wednesday we went to the library and checked out library books and read AR books in the library. On Thursday, we watched an interest grabber about scientific facts about light. Then we listened (and followed along in our literature textbooks) to the story "Lights in the Night" located on pages 441-446. The class then worked on exercises pg.447 (all) and wrote the Build Vocabulary words in their notebooks. Part of the period was dedicated to a scheduled Pep Rally. Friday,
the students took turns and read aloud "The Blue Jay"
on page 452 in the literature book and then did page 457 (1-4)-Check and Critical (1-6). Today, we began the novel "The Watsons go to Birmingham". The students had so much fun reading aloud. This story is a comedy, and some of the students enjoyed the story so much that they were laughing with tears coming out of their eyes. We will have daily quizzes to make sure everyone is keeping up with the reading. We will read one chapter a day. Remember this novel is mandatory and can be purchased at Ms. Bee's bookstore on Main Street (beside Kentucky Fried Chicken). This novel is paperback and is about six or seven dollars.
Here is the Supply List that is Mandatory for all classes:
72 count pencils that can be purchased at Walmart for about $3.97
colored pencils
construction paper
graph paper
glue stick
scissors-rounded end
protractor (math only)
Expo markers
Dividers with tabs for folder
The folder needs to be paper backed so I can have a light load to carry home. There needs to be 3 prongs
with 2 pockets.
Second period - Blue Folder
Third period - Red Folder
Fourth period - Green Folder
Fifth period - Orange Folder
Sixth period - Yellow Folder
Seventh period - Purple Folder
Ticket System - I am taking donations or help from any parent who would like to donate. We will give away rewards for the tickets that the students earned during the week. This will be done every Friday. The students save their tickets in a zip lock bag with their names on their own bag.
This is to be a positive reinforcement for good behavior. The following is how to earn tickets:
1. Be in your seat before the bell rings.
2. Start working at the sound of the bell.
3. Respect the teacher and do what is asked the FIRST time.
4. Get caught being good in the halls or in the classroom.
5. Stay on task the entire class time.
6. Turn in your homework.
7. Transition to different activities without talking.
Students also have class rules. Have them show you their folder and sign their rules so that I know that they showed them to you.
Please feel free to contact me at ANYTIME!!!!!!
Email me at bunnellek@k12tn.net
I know this is alot of information. We are working to help your child become a GREAT student!!!!!
Thank you ahead of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
