Prerequisite(s): Ninth Grade Physical Science & Algebra I with C average or better on Gateway Test
The student should have an inquisitive nature as to how things work, have good color distinction, manual dexterity, shape perception, tidy habits, and a good work ethic. The ability to read and then follow directions is also an advantage. This course is an introduction into Industrial Chemistry. Theory
and laboratory work are offered in general chemistry, balances, analytical measurements, volumetric analysis, precipitation methods analysis, and use of instruments in analysis and experimentation.
Honors Industrial Chemistry II

Prerequisite(s): Industrial Chemistry I, Algebra I and Passing Gateway
This is a continuation of Industrial Chemistry 1 and completes the indepth studies of quantitative inorganic analysis, organic chemistry and process studies. Students are prepared to enter and advance as laboratory assistants in chemical manufacturing
plants, environment related industries and research laboratories.
Industrial Chemistry I satisfy one of the math credits required for graduation; may replace Algebra II or Geometry
This does not replace Algebra I or Gateway Mathematics Exam
Industrial Chemistry II satisfies one science credits required for graduation
This does not replace Biology I or Gateway Biology Exam
Note: Career Management Success is required as a part of the Trade and Industrial Education student’s concentrator sequence or Technical Path in the MANUFACTURING, CONSTRUCTION, and TRANSPORTATION sub clusters.
Career Management Success is a Core Course for Career
Clusters. The course provides students with tools for achieving success in their academic, work, and personal lives. Course content emphasizes the basic skills and knowledge needed for employment success, as identified by industry and supported by relevant national standards. All course content is presented in a realworld context, providing concrete opportunities for developing personal and career goals, effective communication skills, teamwork abilities, and successful work attitudes. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to complete
Professional Development Program Level I and Level II of SkillsUSA (VICA) or other degree programs in other career and technical youth organizations.

Three (3) units of mathematics: all students, both those in university and technical preparation curriculums are required to complete Algebra I or Technical Algebra (formally Math for Technology II), Algebra II, and Geometry 3. Three (3) units of science which include at least one (1) unit drawn from the life sciences and one (1) unit drawn from the physical sciences. One of the three (3) science courses for students who enter 9 th grade in 2001 - 2002
and thereafter must be Biology I. Physical Sciences:
Earth/Space Science; Geology; Physical Science;

THE FOLLOWING COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS FOR
CORE REQUIREMENTS ARE PERMITTED:
• Applied Communications/English IV (Grade 12) satisfies the English IV (Grade 12) credit required for graduation. The teacher shall hold an endorsement in English 7- 12. Advanced Placement English programs of the College Board may substitute for English III or English IV. • Algebra I, taken at the eighth grade level, satisfies the Algebra I requirement for graduation provided the student meets the criteria for such credit. A credit in Algebra IB satisfies the Algebra I requirement for graduation.
• Industrial Chemistry I satisfies one of the
mathematics credits required for graduation.
• Industrial Chemistry II or III, Anatomy &
Physiology, or Biomedical Technology, satisfies one
of the science credits required for graduation.

• The University Path, in addition to the core curriculum, requires completion of the courses needed for entrance into Tennessee’s public colleges and universities, which include 2 units of the same foreign language and a unit of fine arts.
College admission standards in mathematics require
Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, or another unit in
an advanced mathematics course.
• The Technical Path, in addition to the core curriculum, includes a 4 unit focused plan of study which has been designed especially with the individual student’s interests and goals in mind. Students enrolled in the technical curriculum are required to complete three (3) units ofmathematics, one of which shall include Algebra I or Technical Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II.
• The Combined (Dual) Path requires that the student
meet the requirements for the University Path and the
Technical Path. However, the 4 courses identified as
electives under the University Path must be in a
Technical Focus area as defined in Section IV, Careers
and Technology Education Course Descriptions.

HONORS DIPLOMA
Students are eligible for an honors diploma if they: 1) meet the minimum units of credit required for graduation in either the university preparation curriculum or the technical preparation
curriculum, 2) maintain at least a 3.0 academic average on a 4.0 scale, and 3) meet the Competency or Gateway Exam standards.
HIGH SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
The High School Certificate will be awarded to students who have earned the specified required units of credit (see requirements for regular diploma) but have not met Competency or Gateway Exam standards.
Students who entered 9 th grade in 2001
or later and subsequently take and satisfactorily pass all three Gateway Exams (Gateway Mathematics Algebra
I, Gateway Science Biology I, and Gateway Language Arts English II/Grade 10) may exchange the high school certificate for a diploma. Students who entered 9 th grade prior to 200102 may substitute a passing score on the Gateway Math or Language Arts assessment for the math and/language component(s) of the Competency Test and may also exchange the high school certificate for a diploma. These students will not be required to take the Gateway Biology exam. (3) Candidate must make an average standard score of not less than 450 and no score on any component of the test battery shall be less than 410 with a total of 2250.
TIME LIMITATIONS
Students have five (5) years from the year of ninth (9 th ) grade entry to complete the graduation requirements which are specified at their year of entry. After that time has elapsed, students will be required to meet the standards in effect for the
year in which they graduate. Students who have met the TCAP or Gateway Exam requirements will not have to retake the examinations; however, they must earn the required credits in effect for the year in which they graduate.
The CONSTRUCTION CLUSTER, TRANSPORTATION CLUSTER, and MANUFACTURING CLUSTER areas require the base CORE
course for that cluster AND the Career Management
Success course.
. For students in SY 2002 2003
and beyond, a technical focus is defined as a minimum of four units of credit in a sequential and focused vocational program of study or a minimum of 3 units of
credit in a sequential and focused vocational program of study
with one additional unit in a related vocational course.
Adult Living, Interpersonal Relationships, Keyboarding Computer
(Vocational), and Exploring Technology may be
combined with any Careers and Technology Cluster Area.
However, there are other vocational courses that may be
combined to complete the technical focus of 4 required units.
Please contact the Division of Careers and Technology, if
there are questions about a specific course.
. In order for a student to receive Vocational credit, a vocational
teacher must teach the course. Students who choose either
the Combined (Dual) or Technical Path for graduation
purposes must meet the criteria for a technical focus.
. Students may not receive less credit than the minimum shown
or more credit than the maximum shown for the course.
Minimum and maximum credit for courses are listed in the
individual course descriptions.
. Prerequisite(s) cannot be waived for courses.
. Students may wish to select a Tech Prep Program of study.
Tech Prep offers students the opportunity to combine
secondary courses with articulated postsecondary programs.
Tech Prep programs of study lead to a certificate, associate
degree or apprenticeship upon completion.
