AEST consist of four(4) courses: Concepts of Agriculture, Plant Science, Environmental Science and Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship.
The MS-CPAS testing is broken in to two testing phases: Concepts and Environmental will occur in November, Plant Science and Agribusiness/Entrepreneurship in April of each school year.
Concepts of Agriculture is a student-centered computerized course describing and providing hands on activities in the ten most popular areas of agriculture in MS. These areas are Aquaculture, Natural Resources, Horticulture, Plant Science, Agribusiness/Marketing, Agriculture Mechanics, Crop Production, Animal Science, Soil Science, and Forestry.
Plant Science provides instruction in the production, marketing of plants, plant physiology, plant growing structures and cultural practices for producing plants.
The Science of Agricultural Environment is a course to introduce and develop skills in environmental areas related to the use and management of natural resources in the food and fiber systems.
The Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship technology course covers the role and characteristics of agricultural and related businesses in our economy. The purpose of this course is to provide: a basis for making effective business decisions; setting goals; assessing and solving problems; determining financial progress and success; evaluating the management of resources; and gaining skills useful in everyday life in the diverse fields of agribusiness and entrepreneuship.
Students from the AEST class will be participating in the Envirothon competition in 2008. Participating students have been notified and will begin receiving study material Monday, November 12, 2007. April 3, 2008 is the date for the local competition with the top five (5) teams moving on to state competition on May 9, 2008 in Morton, MS. State winners will go on to Flagstaff, AZ in July for national competition.
The two(2)Evirothon teams of the Greenville Technical Center completed their first training day on January 24, 2008 at the Washington County Extension building. The next training will be February 21 or 28, 2008. The Envirothon for February 28, 2008 has been cancled. Information from the training session will be mailed from Mr. Joey Adams at a later date.
March 4, 3rd nine week exam
March 5-14, MS-CPAS intensive review for Level II AEST studntes.
March 17-24, Spring Break and Easter Break
March 25, MS-CPAS test for level II AEST students.
Up coming events for April includes student appreciation day on April 11 and a trip to Alcorn State University on April 17, 2008. The trip to Alcorn will be an all day event, students will have the opportunity to meet university staff, industry representatives, agriculture companies and participate in semianars about career success, job skills and academic achievement.
Watermelon plants for All Domestic Farms have been shipped and students are currently seeding their own crops for SAE or home gardens. Seeding will continue through May 15th and all plants must be picked up by May 24, 2008.
Students will be taking 4th nine-week exams on Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
