PATRIOT GALLERY:
The Patriot Gallery has been a little slow to change this year due to my other responsibilities so I apologize for the lack of new and exciting displays. I will soon be putting up a display of the work of Claude Monet. No children's work will be included in this exhibit, but it will be a beautiful and informative one to greet you in the entrance. Monet's birthday is November 14 so what better artist to celebrate than the great impressionist!
FUNDRAISER:
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful response to our annual art fundraiser! I realize that the school was so busy with other fundraisers that most of you felt overwhelmed but we were still able to place an order of over 150 artworks. The profits from this sale will be utilized by the art classroom. New paints, glue sticks, etc. are always needed so I really appreciate your participation!
WITH THE CLASSES:
1st - The first grade has just begun to frontload the fun unit on fairytales, so the students are listening to "The Abiyoyo". This is always a favorite of the students and the artwork they create based on the clues in the story are always wonderful!
2nd - Second grade has several projects in the works right now. They will be working on tissue paper collage to include in their year-long book project, and they are also working on Self-portraits to coincide with their PYP unit. The self-portrait is the artist's way to write an "autobiography"!
3rd - The students in 3rd grade completed pennies which were altered in scale to coincide with their PYP unit on money, and they also completed some beautiful drawings done in the style of the Oaxacan woodcarvers of Mexico. They also completed a special treat...Halloween collages!
4th - The fourth graders are currently studying Walter Anderson, the most famous Mississippi artist. We will be studying his artwork throughout the year, but this time we are studying his life and his studio that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. This is a part of their PYP unit on Natural Disasters.
5th - The PYP unit on pollution is allowing the fifth graders to create "pollution/solution" posters. These are works that incorporate several forms of pollution while still suggesting solutions to the pollution problem. They also completed personal creations for the original works project.
6th - The sixth grade has begun their PYP on elements and the periodic table. As a summative assessment to this unit, the students will be creating thematic "Jeopardy" games in the art classrooms.
As you can see, the school notes haven't changed much but we have certainly been keeping busy in the art classroom! We surely do have fun...
Paint Happy,
Ms. Koehler
