READING VOCABULARY for First Term

Week 2 	THE RAJAH’S RICE

1.	bulging—swelling out
2.	celebration—activities in honor of a special event
3.	chessboard—game board used for playing chess or checkers
4.	foolishness—behavior that shows a lack of good sense
5.	marketplace—location where goods are bought and sold
6.	snickered—laughed in a secretive, disrespectful way
7.	spice—seasoning for food, made from plants
8.	vow—solemn promise or pledge

Week 3 	A LITTLE EXCITEMENT
1.	absolutely—completely; without any doubt
2.	blizzards—heavy snowstorms with strong winds
3.	companions—friends
4.	crackled—made sharp, snapping sounds
5.	fiery—made up of fire; lit
6.	ignited—set or caught on fire
7.	soot—black powder formed from burning wood or other fuel
8.	weariness—tiredness


Week 4 	THE LOST LAKE 
1.	compass—instrument for showing direction
2.	darted—moved suddenly and quickly
3.	glum—unhappy; in low spirits
4.	knapsack—cloth bag used for carrying clothes or supplies
5.	muttered—spoke in a low, unclear way
6.	poncho—cloak with a hole in the middle for the head

Week 5 	SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL
1.	eerie—strange and scary
2.	huddled—gathered close together, as for comfort or warmth
3.	pesky—troublesome or annoying
4.	prairie—grassland
5.	reins—straps, attached to a horse’s headgear, through which a person guides the horse
6.	squal-sudden strong gust of wind followed by rain or snow
