Do Now: Students will complete the General Information sheet

The teacher will go over the first day paperwork with all students and make sure there is a clear understanding of all classroom rules and procedures.

The students will then take the U.S. History pretest in order to display their previous knowledge.

8/13-8/14

Do Now: Complete the 'Geography Skillbuilder' 1-2 on pg.205. Write questions, hi-light answers.

The students will be able to explain the differences between the culture of the Native Americans of the Great Plains and that of the white settlers who began to expand into the region in the late 1800s. They will complete a set of guided notes which explains these differences and how these differences led to conflict between the U.S. government and the Native Americans. The students will be able to explain the results of this conflict as well.

The students will complete the Ch.5 terms and names for homework.


8/15-8/16/07

Do Now: Read "Cattle Becomes Big Business" on pp. 208-210. Complete the 'Geography Skillbuilder' on pg.209, 1-2, write the question, hi lite the answer.

The students will take a section of guided notes dealing with the expansion of the white settlers into Native American held territories and how this led to conflict between the Native Americans and the U.S. Army.

They will then watch a brief United Streaming clip entitled "Custer's Last Stand" which deals with the Battle at Little Bighorn and how the Native Americans dealt with the U.S. Army. There will be a brief video quiz at the end of the clip.

8/17-20/07

Do Now: Complete the Ch.5, sec.1 margin questions a-c(pp.203-206). Write the questions and hi-lite the answers.

The students will watch a brief clip of "Dances With Wolves" to see how the white settlers had an adverse effect on the lives of the Native Americans in the Great Plains.

The students will then take a section of guided notes which details how the railroad expanded into the west and how the population of the west grew due to government grants, the Homestead Act, and the opening of the Oklahoma territory.

8/21-22/07

Do Now: Comlete the margin questions a,b, and d for ch.5, sec.2 on pp.215 and 217. Write questions and hi lite answers.

The students will watch a brief video segment from the movie "Far and Away" which will show the settlers who participated in the land race for the Oklahoma territory and how some of the settlers claimed their land "sooner" than what was legal.

The students will then take a section of guided notes which explains the economic plight of many of the farmers in the Great Plains region of the U.S.

The students will then complete the Main Ideas 1-3, 5-8 on pg.226. Write questions, hi lite answers

8/23-24/07

Do Now: Complete questions 1 and 2 for the "Analyzing Political Cartoons" section on pg. 220. Write questions, hi lite answers.

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deal with the rise of the Populist party and explains how they influenced the government to pass laws which would benefit not only farmers, but most consumers in general. They will also be able to explain how the Panic of 1893 began and what effects it had on the U.S.

The students will begin working on the ch.5 test review for the ch.5 test which will be next week.

Do Now: The students will pick up a Ch.5 Test review from the table and use their notes, their textbooks, and their wits to complete it.

The teacher will orally review the information on the Ch.5 Test review and prepare the students for the Ch.5 Test which will be given on Wednesday, August 29 for A day classes, and Thursday, August 30 for B day classes.

Do Now: Use your ch.5 study guide to review for your test.

The teacher will lead an oral review of the information on the ch.5 test and answer any questions the students may have regarding the test.

The students will take the ch.5 test.

The students will begin defining the terms and names for ch.6 when they finish the ch.5 test.

8/31-9/04/07

Do Now: The students will complete the "Geography Skillbuilder" on pg.231, numbers 1 and 2. Write questions, hi lite answers.

The students will complete a brief section of guided notes in which they will be able to explain how the U.S. made the transition from an agricultural nation to that of an industrial nation. They will give examples of inventors who used technology to further the industrial age and how their inventions changed the way our country operated on a daily basis.

The students will then watch a brief video clip from United Streaming entitled "Alexander Graham Bell" which shows how Bell's work with the deaf lead him to invent the telephone. A  short video quiz will follow the video clip.

9/5-6/07

Do Now: Pick up the SATP practice set on 'Westward Expansion' and answer the questions by circling the answers. This will begin to prepare you for the types of questions you will see on the SATP.

The students will take a short section of notes which explains how the completion of the transcontinental railroad led to the invention of time zones. The students will then complete a short activity in which they will have to be able to determine various times of arrival using variables of distance and location.

The students will complete the Ch.6 sec.2 margin questions a-d.

9/7-10/07

Do Now: The students will use the time zone map on pg.239 of their book to answer the following questions.

    If it is midnight on Tuesday in Jackson, MS, what time and day is it in:
       1. San Francisco     2. New York         3.Chicago    4. Topeka    5. Indianapolis

   6. If you left Sacramento for Chicago at 2pm Thursday, and the train ride took 32 hours, what time and day would you arrive?

   7. If you left Norfolk for Ft. Worth at 10pm Wednesday, and the train ride took 17 hours, what time and day would you arrive?

   8. If you left Albuquerque for Atlanta at 11am on Saturday, and the train ride took 27 hours, what time and daywould you arrive?

   9. If you left Pittsburgh for Seattle on Monday at 3pm, and the train ride took 45 hours, what time and day would you arrive?

The students will take a brief section of guided notes dealing with the Grangers and how they pushed the government to pass laws which would regulate the railroads.

The students will then watch a brief United Streaming video clip which deals with the role of the railroads in the industrial revolution. The students will have a short video quiz after the video.

9/11-12/07

Do Now: Complete the 'Graph Skillbuilder' on pg. 247, 1 and 2. Write the question, hi lite the answer.

The students will take a short section of guided notes dealing with Andrew Carnegie and his influence on business in America and how he changed the way that businesses operated.

The students will then watch a United Streaming video clip which deals with the 9/11 attacks. This video is date sensitive since today's date is the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

9/13-14/07

Do Now: Pick up the Graph Skillbuilder worksheet dealing with labor changes in the U.S. Use the graphs on the front of the sheet to answer the questions on the back of the sheet.

The teacher will lead a section of guided notes which deal with the evolution of business in America, how monopolies and trusts were formed, and how the every day man dealt with these problems through laws and the organization of labor unions.

The students will complete the Main Ideas 1-8 on pg.250. Write the questions and hi lite the answers.

9/17-18/07

Do Now: Pick up the first two pages of the Ch.6 test review and use your notes to complete it.

The students will take a short section of guided notes dealing with strikes and how the public's perception of unions changed because of the violence in these strikes.

The students will receive the last two pages of the ch.6 review. They will complete the review in class, the teacher will grade it, and they will go over it.

The Ch.6 Test will be given on Wednesday, 9/19 and Thursday 9/20

Do Now: Use your ch.6 review sheet to study for the ch.6 test

The teacher will orally review the students for the ch.6 test

Do Now: Complete the Geography Skillbuilder on pg.255 numbers 1 and 2. Write the question and hi lite the answers.

The teacher will lead a short section of guided notes which details the period of immigration between 1870's and the 1920's. The students will learn where the immigrants came from and the reasons they left their home countries to come to the U.S.

The students will watch a brief portion of "Far and Away" which shows an Irish immigrant and the experiences he dealt with when immigrating to the U.S.

9/26-27/07

Do Now: Complete the Geography Skillbuilder on pg.263, 1-2, write questions, hi lite answers

The teacher will give a brief lecture dealing with the working and living conditions of many immigrants from the 1870s-1920s. The students will take a short section of guided notes dealing with this information.

The students will watch a brief clip from 'Far and Away' which details the living conditions of Irish immigrants in the U.S. at this time.

The students will complete the Ch.7, sec.2 margin questions a-c and the 'critical thinking' number 3 on pg.266

Begin the review for the nine weeks test.

Do Now: Complete the 'Taking Notes' number 2 on pg.271

The teacher will lead a review of the material on the nine weeks test and answer any questions the students may have on ch.5,6 or 7. Students will use their ch.5 and 6 test reviews and the first two sections of notes from ch.7 to review for the nine weeks test.

The students will participate in a review game using the information on the nine weeks test.

Do Now: Complete the Immigration/Urbanization crossword puzzle on the cart

The students will complete a section of guided notes which describes the political corruption created by the political machines of the Gilded Age.

When the students finish the guided notes, they will complete the margin questions for ch.7 sec.3 (a-d). Once they complete this, they will begin working on their homework, worksheet 48-49 which deals with the changes in industrialization between 1879-1909.

10/11-12/07

Do Now: Pick up an S.A.T.P. review sheet and complete the questions by circling the correct answer.

The students will take a brief section of guided notes dealing with political machines, patronage, and the fight to end patronage on a national level. The assassination of President James Garfield will be discussed which will lead us to watch a brief United Streaming video clip concerning his assassination.

The students will complete the margin questions for section 3 of chapter 7 which begin on pg. 268

10/15-16/2007

Do Now: Complete the 'Taking Notes" #2 on pg.289

The students will take a brief section of guided notes which deal with the problems of segregation and discrimination faced by African Americans, Mexicans, and Chinese who had either recently gained their freedom or immigrated to the U.S. Subjects such as Plessy v. Ferguson, Jim Crow Laws, literacy tests and the poll tax will be discussed.

The students will complete the ch.7 test review. If they do not finish in class, they are to finish it for homework.

The Ch.7 test will be given on Friday, Oct.19, and Monday, Oct.22.

Do Now: Complete the ch.7 test review if you have not already finished it

The teacher will go over and grade the ch.7 test review, making sure that the students have all of the correct answers.

The students will participate in a review game which will deal with the material that will be on their ch.7 test.

The students will take a brief section of guided notes dealing with America's entrance into the Spanish American war and what the results were.

The students will then watch a video clip from United Streaming which details how America became an imperialistic country as it follows the acquisition of Alaska and Hawaii, the Spanish American war, and the U.S. involvement in the Boxer Rebellion

Do Now: Complete the 'Analyzing Political Cartoons' numbers 1-3, write the question, hi lite the answer

The students will take a section of guided notes which details how the U.S. dealt with the territories they took posession of after the Spanish American war and how these acquisitions changed the manner in which the U.S. foreign policy changed.

The students will complete ch.10 sec.3 margin questions a-c for homework.

Do Now: Pick up an SATP Practice set and circle the letter which best answers the question

The teacher will go over the Do Now and the students will correct any answers that they may have missed

The students will take a brief section of guided notes which describe the evolution of U.S. foreign policy under John Hay and how Theodore Roosevelt used foreign policy to advance the position of the U.S.

The students will complete the ch.10 section 1 and 2 quiz and turn in when they are finished.

The teacher will lead the students through a section of guided notes which deals with the foreign policies of Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson and how these policies changed the way the U.S. was viewed on the international stage.

This section will include the push for social equity, morality through prohibition, economic reform of big business, and the use of efficiency in industry.

Do Now: Complete the 'Women's Suffrage' guided reading sheet.

The students will complete a brief section of guided notes which deals with Teddy Roosevelt's administration and his push to accomplish his progressive agenda. A discussion of "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair will be included as well as an example of how Roosevelt was able to get laws passed which would improve American life during this period.

The students will watch a United Streaming video clip which details how Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle" and how it affected life America.

The students will take a video quiz after watching the video clip

11/16-26/07

Do Now: Complete the "Analyzing Political Cartoons" on pg.319 (1-3) Write questions, hi lite answers.

The students will take a brief section of guided notes concerning Theodore Roosevelt's progressive agenda and how he accomplished this agenda from his 'bully pulpit'.

The students will complete the ch.9 sec.3 quiz worksheets.

11/27-28/07

Do Now: Complete the 'Graph Skillbuilder' on pg. 334, (1 and 2) write questions, hi lite answers

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deals with Taft's administration, it's failure, and the re-emergence of Roosevelt into the presidential election and how this lead to the election of Wilson. The students will also explain Wilson's 'New Freedom' and what his goals were with this program.

The students will complete the ch.9 sec.4 and 5 margin questions (A-C, A-D)

Do Now: Complete the timeline on "Taking Notes" number 2 on pg.337

The students will take a brief section of guided notes dealing with Woodrow Wilson's administration and how he continued the Progressive reforms started by Roosevelt and Taft.

Do Now: Use your Chapter 9 review packet to study for your test

The teacher will grade the Chapter 9 review packet and then go over the packet to make sure that all students understand the answers.

The students will then divide up into groups and participate in a review game.

The Chapter 9 test will be given on Wednesday 12/5 and Thursday 12/6.

The students will then watch "All Quiet on the Western Front" to gain the German perspective of the war and to see why Remarque wrote the book as an anti-war novel.

Do Now: Organize your semester exam review materials. You will need to have Ch.5,6,7,9 and 10 review sheets to study for the semester exam.

The students will watch the final part of "All Quiet on the Western Front" in order to gain an understanding of the plight of the soldiers in World War I.

The students will complete the guided notes which deal with the causes of World War I and how the U.S. eventually got into the war.

Once they finish the notes, they will watch a brief video clip from United Streaming which shows the major players in World War I and how the U.S. was eventually pulled into the war.

After the video, the students will complete the ch.11 sec.1 margin questions a-f. Write questions/hi lite the answers.

1/11-14/08

Do Now: Pick up a World War I map and use pg.375 as your guide. Choose three different colors and color all the the Central Powers one color, all of the Allies a second color, and all countries who remained neutral a third color.

The students will take a section of guided notes which deals with America's entrance into the war as well as the technological developments that changed warfare in general. The notes will also cover Germany's surrender and the reasons why.

The students will complete the ch.11 sec.2 margin questions a-e.

1/15-16/08

Do Now: Complete the "Analyzing Political Cartoons" on pg.391. Write questions and hi lite answers.

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deals with the war effort at home and how the industrial might of the U.S. helped to win the war. It will also include the efforts of the government to develop a peace plan, an explanation of why Wilson's 14 Point Plan would fail, and how the Treaty of Versailles would lead to World War II.

The students will begin working on the ch.11 test review. Their test will be given on Tuesday 1/22 and Wednesday 1/23.

1/17-18/08

Do Now: Use your ch.11 study guide to study for your ch.11 test.

The teacher will grade and go over the ch.11 study guide to make sure that all students have the correct answers.

The students will then participate in a group review game activity. The winning group will receive 5 bonus points on their ch.11 test.

The ch.11 test will be given on Tuesday 1/22 and Wednesday 1/23.

Do Now: Use your ch.11 study guide to study for the ch.11 test.

The teacher will conduct a brief oral review of the information on the ch.11 test and allow students to ask any questions that they may have.

The students will take the ch.11 test. After the test, the students will complete the ch.12 terms and names.

Do Now: Complete the "Interpreting Graphs"skillbuilder on pg.416, 1 and 2. Write questions, hi lite answers.

The students will take a short section of guided notes which deals with the Harding administration and the problems faced by President Harding. The quota system for immigrants will be discussed as well as the Teapot Dome Scandal, and the beginning of Prohibition.

The students will watch a portion of "The Untouchables" to gain an understanding of how Prohibition led to organized crime in the U.S.

1/28-29/08

Do Now: Complete the "Interpreting Graphs" Skillbuilder on pg.427
Write questions, hi lite answers.

The students will take a brief section of guided notes dealing with the Coolidge administration, and how he worked to help businesses succeed in the U.S. We will discuss the expanded use of the automobile during this period as well as the continuing saga of Prohibition.

The students will watch the next installment of "The Untouchables" which deals with Prohibition in the U.S.

The students will complete the ch.12 sec.3 margin questions A-E for homework.

1/30-31/08

Do Now: Complete the "Standardized Test Practice" on pg.431. Write only the answers.

The students will complete a section of guided notes on ch.13 which deals with the changes that were being made in society during the roaring twenties. Changes such as those made by the fundamentalist, women who dealt with the double standard, and African Americans who participated in the Harlem Renaissance will be discussed.

The students will watch the final installment of "The Untouchables" to gain a perspective of Prohibition in America during the roaring 20s.

2/1-4/08

Do Now: Use the map on pg.448 to answer the following-
1. Where do those people who make above $80,000 live?
2. Where do those who make less than $42,000 live?
3. Why do you think this is the case?

The students will complete the ch.13 section 1 guided reading which details the categorization of urban areas by size, explains where they are located, and the describes how they are set up.

2/5-6/08

Do Now: Use the map on pg.459 to answer the following
1. When was the largest part of Chicago annexed?
2. When was the smallest part of Chicago annexed?
3. How many counties are in the Chicago MSA?

The students will watch a brief United Streaming video which deals with how the city of New York was built and how it has evolved. This video gives this students an overview of city building in general.

The students will take a quiz on the video.

The students will be given back their graded ch.13 sec.1 guided reading and they will go over it with the teacher to correct any mistakes they may have made. The teacher will answer any questions and clarify any problems with the material in this section.

2/7-8/08

Do Now: Use your ch.12/13 study guide to review for the test.

The teacher will lead the students in an oral review of the material on the ch.12/13 test. The teacher will answer any questions the students may have about the test.

The students will take the ch.12/13 test.

2/11-12/08

Do Now: Complete the 'Graph Skillbuilder' on pg.470, 1 and 2, write questions hi lite answers

The teacher will lead the students through the ch.14 sec.1 guided notes which deals with the economic situation before the stock market crash of 1929 and the events which led up to the crash itself.

The students will then complete the ch.14 sec.1 margin questions a-e. If students do not complete the assignment in class they will be able to complete it for homework.

2/13-14/08

Do Now: Complete the "Geography Skillbuilder" on pg.474, numbers 1 and 2. Write the question/hi lite answer.

The students will complete the ch.14 sec.2/3 guided notes which deals with the effects of the Great Depression on the public and how President Hoover attempted to solve some of the problems caused by the depression, including the Dust Bowl.

The students will watch a brief United Streaming video clip which deals with the Great Depression and how it affected the common man.

2/15-19/08

Do Now: The students should pick up an SATP practice set and begin working on it.

The teacher will lead the students through the last part of the ch.14 sec.2/3 guided notes.

The students will then watch a United Streaming video about Roosevelt's election and his solutions for the Great Depression. The students will take a video quiz at the end of the video segment.

2/20-21/08

Do Now: Complete the 'Interpreting Visual Sources' exercise on pg.497. 1 and 2, write questions, hi lite answers

The students will complete the ch.15 sec.1 guided notes which deal with Roosevelt's New Deal and how those programs affected the Great Depression.

Once students have finished the guided notes, they will begin to work on the ch.15 sec.1 margin questions and turn them in along with their 'do now' at the end of class.

2/22-25/08

Do Now: Complete the 'Graph Skillbuilder' on pg.517 1 and 2. Write questions/hi lite answers.

The students will complete the ch.15 sec.2 guided notes which deals with the social changes which took place during the Great Depression.

When the students complete the ch.15 sec.2 guided notes, they will begin working on the ch.14/15 test review, part 1

Do Now: Pick up pages 4,5,and 6 of the ch.14/15 test review and begin working on it.

When you are finished, combine both parts of the review and turn it in for grading. Mr Dunwoody will hand it back to you and we will go over it together.

After going over the review the class will participate in an oral review game.

The students will discuss and review the steps that Hitler had taken in order to take over most of the land in Eastern Europe. The students will then complete the second section of ch.16 sec.2/3 guided notes which deal with Hitler's invasion of Poland, the declaration of war by Britain and France, the Battle of Britain, Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, and the Holocaust.

The students will complete the ch.16 sec.4 margin questions (A-E) write the quesitons, hi lite the answers.

3/26-27/08

Do Now: Complete the "Geography Skillbuilder" on pg.556, 1 and 2, write the questions and hi lite the answers.

The students will complete a small section of guided notes which deals with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and how the United States was pulled into World War II.

The students will then watch a United Streaming video clip which deals with the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.

3/28-31/08

Do Now: Complete the 'History Through Film' Skillbuilder on pg.566, 1 and 2. Write questions hi lite answers.

The students will discuss the entrance of the U.S. into the war, how Roosevelt and Churchill worked together to devise a strategy, and how the Allies eventually were able to defeat Hitler's forces in Europe. They will complete the ch.16 sec.2/3 guided notes.

The students will then work on the ch.17 terms and names.

4/1-2/08

Do Now: If you have not completed your ch.17 terms and names, do so now

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deal with the U.S. involvement in the war in the Pacific, specifically dealing with the battles of Midway and Iwo Jima, the development of the atom bomb, and the use of the bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The students will begin working on the ch.16/17 test review.

4/3-4/08

Do Now: Pick up one of the ch.16-17 test reviews and begin working on it.

The teacher will guide the students through the ch.16-17 test review and aid them in completing the review. If they do not complete the review in class, they are to take it home and finish it for homework.

4/7-8/08

Do Now: The students should look over their ch.16/17 test review and begin studying for their test.

The teacher will grade and go over the ch.16/17 test review to make sure that the students have correctly answered all of the questions.

After going over the review, the students will participate in a review game concerning the material on the test review. The test will be given during the following class meeting

4/9-10-08

Do Now: Use your ch.16-17 study guide to prepare for your test.

The teacher will lead a short oral review of the information on the ch.16/17 test.

The students will take the ch.16-17 test. When they complete the test the teacher will lead them in a short section of guided notes that deals with the beginning of Cold War.

4/11-14/08

Do Now: Pick up the SATP 'Great Depression' practice set and begin working on it.

The students will go over and grade the SATP practice set and discuss the answers. They will be able to ask questions about the information within the practice set in order to prepare them to take the SATP.

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deals with the beginning of the Cold War, our relationship with the Soviet Union, and how the U.S. dealt with the problems created during the Cold War such as containment, the Berlin Airlift, and Truman Doctrine.

4/15-16/08

Do Now: Pick up and complete the SATP Practice set for Imperialism/World War I

The students will go over and grade the SATP practice set and they will be allowed to ask questions and discuss any of the material they may not understand.

The students will complete a section of guided notes which deals with the election of John F.Kennedy, his role in domestic and foreign issues, his assassination, and the subsequent Johnson administration.

4/17-18/08

Do Now: Use your textbook, notes, review sheets, and guided notes to prepare for the SATP Practice Test

The students will take the SATP Practice test. When they are finished they will begin working on the Time Period Placement page to review for the SATP.

4/21-4/30

Students will be working on the SATP review packet from 4/21 until 4/30

The packet includes a time period placement page, geography conflict page, two maps, time period year description page, as well as a practice set for the Cold War, New Frontier, and the Civil Rights Era.

The teacher will lead the students through the review session and answer any questions they may have. The SATP for U.S. History will be given on 4/30/08
