9 Weeks Test Info

My test will consist of 70 multiple choice questions.  25 questions will come from poetry terms and "No News from Auschwitz."  20 will deal with complete sentences (finding fragments and run-ons, revising fragments and run-ons); 19 reading comprehension and vocabulary questions will come from a "cold read" (a passage they have never seen before).  They cannot study for this part because they have to use context clues to determine word meanings.  There will also be 6 pronoun questions; out of 4 sentences, students will find the one sentence that uses pronouns correctly.

3/6 and 3/9

-complete Essay Planning Guide for position paper; topic is as follows:
Communities across the state are considering establishing a curfew for teenagers under the age of

eighteen. Think about whether or not establishing a curfew is a good decision. Take a position. Write

an essay for an interested adult to explain and provide support for your decision. Use reasons and/or

examples with specifi c details to justify your position.


2/20 and 2/25 (because I will be out for Beta convention on 2/23 and 2/24)

Do Now: Pick up packet about Tennessee Williams.  Answer 19-23 on your own paper. (test prep)

HW: Study for POETRY TEST!!  It will cover 20 poetry terms and 10 poems.  Six poems are listed above, and the others are "Mending Wall," "Miss Rosie," "We Real Cool," "Mother to Son."  Also, for extra credit, students can find 6 poetry devices (from the list of 20 terms) in songs.  They must identify the device, write the line from the song, and tell singer and song.

2/5 and 2/6

HW:  Write FINAL copy of essay.  Students will turn in rough draft, peer checklist, and final copy. Also, for EXTRA CREDIT students can write a poem modeled after "We Real Cool."  The poem should be 8 lines (short lines) about a group, like "We Real Cool" focused on the pool players.

1/30 and 2/2

I was out on these days.  Students read the following poems: "Mending Wall" (page 526), "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" (page 516), "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?" (page 561), "We Real Cool" (page 599), "Bonny Barbara Allan" (page 565-6).  For each poem, students were to tell speaker, situation, tone, and ALL literary devices.  Then, students were to peer edit each other's essays, using a checklist.

Do Now: Answer questions 10-18 from passage about Francis Bacon (from English II practice test).  Then read "Miss Rosie" on page 535.  Explicate the poem by discussing speaker, tone, situation of poem, any devices in poem (simile, alliteration, etc.).

Oscar Wilde once said, “Life imitates art.”  Think about this quotation as it relates to Julius Caesar and its relation to your life.  In other words, think about how one of your life experiences appears in the play.  Write a paragraph for an interested adult explaining your thoughts as they relate to this quote.  Be sure to support your thoughts with specific details and/or examples.  PROOFREAD!!!!!  This is a quiz grade!!!
