Welcome to Oral Communications I!!!  I hope this will be a fun learning experience for you as well as a great high school memory.  You're probably wondering what we'll be doing this year, so let me give you a little bit of basic information.

Please note that the Parent Survey Form (which was due on Aug. 11) and the Chapter 1 Study Guide are in the attachments section below in case you need to open and print another copy.

During the first nine week term, we will be learning about the importance of the communication process and how it works, and we will begin working on public speaking with impromptu speaking.  We will also train in the MCTV Studio so that you will be prepared to begin broadcasting during the second term.

When the second term begins in October, you will be expected to begin taking over responsibility for the daily MCTV broadcast--you should be well-trained and prepared by that time.  We will also work on informative, demonstration, and persuasive speeches; and you will be giving speeches regularly in class.

After Christmas we will complete our public speaking study and work on group discussion, one-to-one communication (with an emphasis on interviewing skills,) and computer video editing.  You will continue your MCTV broadcasts and even prepare a special broadcast with your class.

Because almost all communication takes more than one person, we will work in groups during part of every unit.  Also, since this is an oral communication class, much of your work will be done orally and graded on a rubric which will be explained before each of your presentations.

The first day of class you will complete a Student Information sheet in class, and you will receive a Parent Survey form to take home or your parents to fill out.  This form will be due at our second class meeting.  In case you lose yours, I am attaching it to the "Attachments" section below; just click on it to open and print.

Parents and students can email me through this website by clicking on the "click here to send email to the teacher" link at the top of the page OR at lauraisbell@ymail.com.  It is MUCH easier to contact me through email than through the school voicemail system; if you want me to call, just email me your name and number, and I will call as soon as I can after school is over that day.
