SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
Welcome to Madison Central's Student Services web page! Student Services is comprised of four counselors, a secretary and a records clerk.  Our office hours are from 7:45-4:00 Monday through Friday.  Madison Central's four counselors are listed below:

A-E     Shannon Cox       scox@madison-schools.com
F-L     Erica Magee       emagee@madison-schools.com
M-R     Jane Lewis        jlewis@madison-schools.com
S-Z     Kim Ethridge      kethridge@madison-schools.com

We hope that this site will be beneficial to you.  We will post all important information, announcements, and scholarships on this site. For questions, please call or e-mail your child's counselor, we are here to help you!
Staff Meetings:
The counselors will hold staff meetings every Monday at 9AM.  Everyone is always welcome in Student Services at any time, just understand that if we are in a staff meeting, you may have to wait briefly to see us.

Newsletters:
Another way to communicate with our students is through newsletters.  These newsletters offer important test dates, scholarships, upcoming events and other pertinent information.  Sophomores and Juniors will receive newsletters four times a year.  (We issue them with progress reports).  Those dates are listed below.  Seniors are issued newsletters once a month at the beginning of the month.  Extra copies are always available in Student Services.

Report Card and Progress Report Dates:
All report cards and progress reports will be given to your child during homeroom.  Be sure you write down these dates and ask your child for the report when he/she gets home!  The final report card in May will be mailed to your home.  Therefore, if your mailing address has changed, please come by the front office to provide the appropriate residency information.

Report Cards issued:
October 11
January 10
March 27

Progress Reports:
September 13
November 15
February 14
April 24

Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Anytime you want to meet with your child's teachers, please do not hesitate to contact your child's counselor.  She will set up a time for you to meet with them before school or after school.  Don't forget we encourage you to stay in close contact with your child's teachers via telephone or e-mail also!

Transcripts:
For students who have already graduated:  upon written request, a student's transcript will be sent to any designated agency, college or school.  The student must request, upon graduation, that a final transcript be sent to the agency or college of his/her choice.  Transcript request should be sent to Jana Combes in Student Services of Madison Central High School, 1417 Highland Colony Parkway, Madison, MS 39110.  All request must include the following information:  name of the student at the time of attendance, date of graduation or date last attended, date of birth, address to mail transcript, number of copies, date of request, a telephone number to reach person requesting the information, and a signature.

For current MCHS students:  As a part of the admissions process, most colleges require a 7 semester and/or complete official 8 semester transcript.  The transcript contains all the high school semester grades and ACT or SAT test scores.  It is the student's responsibility to request, in writing, that a transcript be sent.  You or your child can request a transcript simply by filling out a form in Student Services.  Seniors, be sure you apply to the college or university BEFORE sending them a transcript. Also, if you need your current GPA added to your transcript, please let us know.  Adding your GPA is not standard procedure until graduation.

ACT Statement:
MADISON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL ACT POLICY is as follows:
1.     Students are encouraged to begin their ACT test taking with the PLAN, which is the practice ACT.  Taken in November of their 10th grade year, this test is an abbreviated version of the ACT and is given during the day at Madison Central.
2.    Once PLAN scores are returned, students should review their scores for an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.  Students should then consider taking the regular ACT following their 10th grade year.
3.    Most Madison Central students at this point will have completed geometry.  This course is used as a reference for test preparation since the math section of the ACT is the most school (achievement) based portion and 80 percent of the math questions are at the pre-algebra, Algebra I and geometry level.  However, students must realize that research has indicated that ACT scores improve as students take more advanced courses, especially in mathematics.
4.    For students who complete geometry either their junior or senior year who are four-year or junior-college bound, they should take the ACT at least in June following the completion of their junior year.  Taking the ACT for the first time in October of their senior year is too late.
5.    The ACT should be taken multiple times because test familiarity leads to less stress and normally higher scores.  An increase of a few points could mean thousands of additional dollars in college scholarships.  It is recommended that students skip at least one testing period between retakes.  This will allow time for score reports to be returned to students so they will be able to determine how to prepare for further ACT’s.  For example, a student who takes the ACT following the completion of his 10th grade year could take it at least four times if applying for early admission (November 1) his senior year.  Testing sessions would include the October, February, and June administrations during his junior year.  Students who apply to schools with a February 1 deadline would have the additional October administration during their senior year.
6.    ACT score improvement is highly likely for students who study.  Various resource materials are available whether in the form of study guides, workshops, or tutors.  Students are encouraged to see their counselor for more information.

Registering for the ACT:
There are two ways to register for the ACT.  One way is to fill out a packet that can be picked up in Student Services.  The other way is to fill out the information online.  The web site is www.act.org.  Please do not forget to add our school code or we will not receive scores that are added to transcripts.  When registering, you are asked "Your High School Code", please be sure you enter: 251740

NCAA & Athletes:
There have been changes in NCAA requirements.  If you are an athlete who is wanting to be eligible for college sports - PLEASE SEE YOUR COUNSELOR ASAP!  Also, NCAA must have your ACT score sent directly to them.  That means, when registering for the ACT, you will be asked "College and Scholarship Choices", be sure you enter: 9999.

Scholarships by E-Mail:
For SENIORS only: not only do we announce scholarships on MCTV, post them on this web site, and print them in your monthly newsletter, you can now receive them via e-mail!  If interested, please sign up in Student Services.  All scholarships are available for pick up in the College Room in Student Services.

College Admissions Counselor Lunch Visit:
Throughout the school year, Madison Central will host  admissions counselors from a variety of universities  or colleges. These visits usually occur during lunch. Admissions officers who visit will be stationed at a table in front of the Student Services Office.  This, again, will be valuable time that you may spend with a school’s representative “one-on-one.”  Make a point to stop by when you see a school that interests you.  Listed below is the current schedule:
3/28  Harvard University
4/2 Hinds CC
4/3 Marines
