Welcome to First Grade
Mrs. Johnston’s Clas
October 7-10
Dear Parents,
I would like to apologize for not having the news letter up last week. I had a death in my immediate family, and have been out.
Reading- This week, we are reviewing all of our bossy r sounds (er, ir, or, ar, ur), and the -oo sound. I am starting to add vowel blends: ee, ea. The rule is: when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and the second one goes to sleep. We have also continuing story sequencing, beginning, middle, and end. We are sorting picture cards and writing sentences to match the story's sequence.
Language- This week we are reviewing all of our short sounds and long sounds. We are also working on ABC order. Please practice this at home. Sentence identification (question VS. statement) is a new skill being introduced.
Math- We are working in Saxon math this year. In the beginning, students are given a review of numbers, number value, shapes, and beginning addition and subtraction. This week we will also work on ordinal numbers( first, second, third, etc.)and addition of doubles (3+3, 1+1,2+2 etc.)
Word Wall Words:- Our WWW test will be a review. I will choose 15 words for this test, and will give two sentences for sentence dictation.
Reminders and important events- This Monday is professional development for teachers. There will be no school for students on Monday, October 6.
Written homework is everynight except Wednesday and Friday. If something is left at home or not completed, students do turn a card. This is their warning card for the day. I DO NOT give checks on the behavior chart for homework. If your child has a check for talking- then they had a problem with talking, following directions- means they continued to not follow directions. Please do not allow them to tell you differently. Write me or call me if you have questions. I always respond- sometimes late- but always!
Also, permission slips are being sent home for the pumpkin patch. We are requesting that parents pay for the trip in cash. I will send home permission slips closer to time. Parents may go, but they can't ride the bus or the hayride. Parents must also pay seperately. I must also stress that while on the trip with me, students belong to me! They can't be checked out at the zoo, walk off with parents, or do extra things alone with mom or dad. I will also handle discipline while at the zoo. Once they come to school, they are AT SCHOOL, and will remain my responcibility. No siblings are allowed to come on a school field trip.
Thanks for all that you do. My class is great.
Thanks,
Mrs. J
