Accelerated English II

Sept. 08-12

Tuesday students will have a basic grammar skills test.  This is a major grade of information that is essential for the MCT2.  Thursday we will have a major test on vocabulary prefixes, root woods and suffixes.  This information is also necessary for the MCT2.  Friday we will have our regular vocabulary quiz.  We will also go over the informative essays the students wrote last week.

The English II Writing Test will be given in October 18  first semester and March 27 for second. In this test, the students will be required to write a specified essay during a two-hour period from supplied prompts using a very strict format.  The multiple choice test, consisting of grammar usage, literary terms, and literary information, reading comprehension, and extensive vocabulary knowledge, will be given December 6 and May 2.

Students will have homework regularly but will sometimes only involve reading or individual studying.

Parents, your students will ALWAYS have studying to do in this course----beginning with DAY ONE. Check tests could be given at any time to insure that students are reading and keeping up with the material. Each student will have three telephone buddies from this class. Because of the 4 by 4 schedule, if a student must be absent, he or she cannot wait until the next class meeting to find out what he or she missed. It is the student's responsibility to find out what he or she missed and to come to class prepared.

Note taking is extremely important in this class! Students should be prepared to take notes during every class meeting whether I give them or not. If a student misses a class, it is the student's responsibility to get missed notes from another student. I will be happy to clarify any points or to answer any questions.

Make-up tests will be given Tuesday mornings at 7:30.

With this in mind, our curriculum will include the following:

  • Essay writing and grammar

  • Short Story Unit

  • Poetry Unit
  • Extensive vocabulary study

  • * A three-ring binder is necessary!

 Public Speaking                                                                                         Shoemake

Sept. 8-12

Persuasive speeches are due on Tuesday.  2.5-4 minutes

Friday-current event speeches. 1-2 minutes

We will begin discussion of senior project speeches.

Public Speaking is a required nine week course at Oak Grove High School.   Although this course is generally considered an enjoyable course, it does require constant preparation.  Normally the students will make both a major speech (test grade) and a minor speech (daily or quiz grade) each week.  A current event speech (daily or quiz grade) will be assigned for each Friday’s class.  An outline of the speech is required for each speech assigned.

Major speeches will be assigned several days ahead of time.  Because of the adequate time frame allowed for speech preparation, if a student is absent the day before a speech is due, he or she will still be expected to present the speech on the assigned day.

Disrupting the speeches of or distracting fellow speakers is not acceptable behavior in this class, and this activity will be severely punished.

Each student will recieve 2 "free passes" in which they may give their speeches the next day (from the assigned day) for a ten-point deduction.  These "free passes" are to be used in emergency situations only and eleminating my believing the escuses of some students and not believing  the excuses of others.  Since speeches are assigned well in advanced before they are due and each student has three telephone buddies, assinments can be easily obtained.  Once the student has used the free passes, no other excuses will be acceptable for missing a speech deadline.

Major speeches are the following:                           Minor speeches are the following:

  • Shoebox speech                                                 *Current event speeches
