Parents and students,
We are looking forward to an exciting year and to start it off we will be participating in a unit on the Olympics. Other teachers in the school will participate by researching participating Olympic countries and P.E. will be doing Olympic activities along with patriotic music in the music class.
Our class will complete activities in:
Olympic history, ancient versus modern sports, Olympic vocabulary research, creation of Olympic sport, art, geography search, Olympic Spirit over the world, researching countries and athletes, Olympic Hall of Fame, Comparing the games and athletes, Creating a team, Olympic pictograms/cartoons, Olympic news, etc.
To begin:
Discuss favorite games at home, playground, com-
petitive.
Discuss meaning of competition-good and bad.
Look at ancient games versus modern Olympics.
Discuss sportsmanship at home, school, Olympics- rewards and consequences.
Discuss importance of rules/following rules.
Discuss importance of training and goal-setting in
order to achieve the goals.
Students choose ancient sport and modern to create
art with self as subject.
Discuss winning medals versus "things"-cars, money
travel, etc.
View pictures of ancient games/modern games and
the location of the games.
Creation of a "new" Olympic game with rules,
scoring, judging, equipment, et.
Researching vocabulary of Olympics using "vocab-
ulary guide" recommended by school administrators.
Creation of "passport" to be completed as the act-
ivities are completed.
Creating flags, torch, rings, etc.
Ending with awarding medals and certificates.
It will be a great year!!!
