Time flies in second grade. Review has ended and we are heavily involved in second grade academics. This necessitates appropriate attention to main idea and details. Children are learning that successful students need to look (at the teacher, Smart Board, etc.) and listen carefully throughout the day. They are beginning to use problem solving to better understand complex concepts. I’m very proud of them!
You will find a skills assessment and a holistic assessment in today’s mail. At the end of each 5-week unit in our language arts curriculum, we have a review unit with assessments that challenge students to apply the skills that we have been reinforcing in the classroom. Typically the scores on these assessments are lower than daily work due to the fact that we are asking the students to apply the information that they have learned over a period of time. Please don’t be overly concerned about grades that you see on these assessments. This is only one grade that is averaged with many other grades throughout the grading period. Writing frequently reflects lower scores. Please find a writing process vs. product packet in today’s mail to better understand the significance of this and other writing activities. We will continue to reinforce the complexities of writing throughout the year.
Conferences continue this Thursday, October 23rd and Nov. 6th. Please check your scheduled time if you haven’t met with me. I do have a few free time slots on Nov. 6th if you would like to discuss anything that may have surfaced since September conferences. Please send me a note if you desire an additional conference.
Halloween is fast approaching. Our parade is scheduled for 2:30 on Oct. 31st. Ms. Ashcroft submits information regarding appropriate costuming. Please check her newsletters for information. I was notified recently that our classroom did not have a head room parent. I haven’t heard anything in the last few days, but please consider this as an opportunity to spend some quality time with your child. Second graders are easily entertained. The children are already very excited and low-key activities such as BINGO or a simple craft are great! I help with classroom control and promise to support your efforts.
Please notify me with questions or concerns. I’m enjoying working with your children. They are inquisitive, full of energy, and delightful!
