Week of 11/24-11/28
*** NO SPELLING WORDS THIS WEEK!! ***
~ Please have your child practice his/her lines for our ABC's of Thanksgiving ! We will be doing this activity in class this week instead of beginning a new Reading story. Return the white card to school on Monday, so we can use it in class! :)
** Thank you for sending in a daily healthy snack with your child!
** Please make sure to review the reading materials inside of your child's special reading box daily! All new vocabulary words should be put inside of the box, on your child's word ring. It may be fun to play a game with the vocabulary words, or useto write them in sentences.
** WEDNESDAY is our Library Day! Your child's book must be returned on that day in order to check out a new one.
** Please make sure to make time on the weekends to listen to your child read poems from his/her Poetry Notebook. It is sent home on Fridays, or Thursday if there is no school on a Friday. There is a letter explaining this inside of the notebook. Please sign as the "Lucky Listener" and return the notebook to school the following MONDAY. I'm enjoying reading your comments. Thank you for your participation!

**** 100 BOOK CHALLENGE ****
Thank you for returning the 100 Book Challenge Contract and agreeing to return the books daily.
You will see a blue 100 Book Challenge Folder come home daily. Inside of it will be your child's Reading Log, book(s), and skill card that corresponds to their level. Please make sure that they are reading for at least one step (15 minutes) every night. Please remember that you are their coach at home. There are papers detailing your "job" inside of the blue folder. When your child completes reading for 15 minutes, please have him/her record a book onto his/her Reading Log and you will sign as their coach. ***REMEMBER: ONE STEP=15 MINUTES OF READING *** If your child brings home two books, that doesn't automatically equal two steps. It depends on how LONG he/she reads! :)
Accordingly, even though the children are developing a love for reading, please do not complete more than 2 steps (30 minutes) a night. In fact, one step (15 minutes) would be sufficient. Reading is wonderful, but the children do need to spend time practicing vocabulary words, spelling words, and math facts! :)
The skills cards are used after your child has completed their reading step. Use them as a guide. Ask your child questions that are on it. When he/she has MASTERED a skill, please date the card with the date this occurred. I will date the card after I have conferenced with your child on THREE books. Thus, he/she will demonstrate the skills on the card to me within three books. I usually only conference with 1 or 2 children per day, so please be patient!
CONGRATULATIONS to those students who have received their medal for 100 steps! I know everyone will reach that goal and continue to read for even more steps!
