Saturday, May 10th, is the first ever National Train Day.  To celebrate this occasion, we are reading train books and even have a train set up and running in the library courtesy of 4th grader Taryn R.  Thank you, Taryn!  We read "Old Penn Station."  The demolition of Penn Station was directly responsible for the creation of the National Historic Preservation Trust Commission of which Chillicothe is a member. In fact I am currently ushering an historic preservation grant through city council for downtown revitalization.  We also looked at a book called "Crossing" which has a very clever title page utilizing a railroad crossing sign.  "Super Fast Trains", bullet trains, and mag-lev (magnetic levitation)were hot topics also.

I am very excited to announce that 5th grader Nicole C. has been very honored for her poster on Molly Pitcher.  She won the district competition AND the state competition and her poster is on its way to Sacramento, California, for the national contest which will be held in June.  Nicole, her parents, and I will be attending a banquet on May 21st.  Congratulations, Nicole!!

For "Right to Read" week I have been asked to read my favorite book at Chillicothe Middle School.  That's an almost impossible task as I have several books that I treasure for different reasons.  And so I am going to highlight several of my favorites and give the reasons I value them and then end by reading "Rough Face Girl."  The quiet tone, unique illustrations, and lesson it teaches all combine to make it a favorite of mine and one that I have repeated numerous times over my 15 years at Flaget.
