Welcome to Sixth Grade Social Studies at John Glenn Middle School!   Homework assignments for Mrs. Olinger's socials studies classes and will be posted here on a weekly basis.

Week of June 1:

Students will continue looking at the effects of World War II on Minnesota, including the stories of men and women who contributed to the war effort on the home front.  Homework will be to finish “war effort” posters if they were not completed in class.



Week of May 26:

Students will be looking at the effects of World War II on Minnesota, including the stories of men and women who contributed to the war effort on the home front.  Homework is to complete the chapter 16 map if it isn’t finished in class.  The final map test will be given on Wednesday, May 27.

Week of May 18:

Students will conclude study of post-industrial Minnesota by looking at the Great Depression and relief efforts at the local, state, and federal level.  Once again, homework is to study practice maps for the Minnesota map test on May 27th.  



Week of May 11:

Please note date change – the final map test will be May 27th instead of May 20th.

Students will continue to explore the social and economical development of Minnesota during the post-industrial era.  Homework will be the chapter 14 map, and continued study of practice maps in preparation for the final map test.

Week of May 4:

Students  will explore the social and economical development in Minnesota during the post-industrial era.  They should be studying their practice maps for the final map test on May 20th.  

Week of April 27:

Students will conclude study of Minnesota’s early industries and begin looking at the urban boom of the twentieth century.  Homework will be to study their industries chart for the chapter 11 test.  They will also need to complete the chapter 12 map if it wasn’t completed in class.  

Week of April 13:

Students will explore the development of the milling, lumbering, and iron mining industries in Minnesota.  Homework will be to complete the vocabulary worksheet to go with the chapter if it wasn’t finished in class.  They should also be studying their practice maps at home.

week of April 6:

Students will continue studying the causes, events, and effects of the Dakota War.  They will also be completing a map of Minnesota lakes, rivers, and cities that will be included on the final map test.  Homework will be to study their maps at home in preparation for the test in May.

Week of March 30:

Students will read chapter 9, “The Dakota War,” to be able to explain the origins, results, and effects of the U.S. – Dakota War of 1862.  Homework will be to complete the map to go with the chapter. It will be due Friday, April 3.

Week of March 23:

All sixth graders are now in their second trimester of social studies.  

Students will continue to study the causes and impact of the Civil War on Minnesota.  Then they will begin looking at the origins, results, and effects of the Dakota War of 1862.  Homework is to study their chapter 8 notes and vocabulary sheets for the test on Thursday.

Week of March 9:

Students will review immigration to Minnesota during the territorial years and then begin examining the causes of the Civil War and its impact on our state.  Homework will be to complete the chapter 8 map.  It is due on Friday, March 13.




Week of March 2:

First trimester students – conclude study of immigration to Minnesota during the territorial years.  There will be no homework this week.

Second trimester students – conclude study of the roles of Minnesotans during World War II.  There will be no homework.  This is your child’s last week of sixth grade social studies.  He or she will be in either art or music for third trimester.





Week of February 23:
First trimester students – complete examination of the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux and begin looking at immigration to Minnesota during the territorial years.  Homework is to write a letter pretending to be an immigrant.  Due date for the letter is Monday, March 2.

Second trimester students – conclude study of post-industrial era in Minnesota and begin looking at the effects of World War II on our state, including the stories of men and women who contributed to the war effort on the home front.  Homework is to complete the chapter 16 map.  It is due Friday, February 27.

Week of February 16:

First trimester students – begin an examination of the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux and its effects on the Dakota and the settlement of Minnesota.  Homework will be to complete a worksheet on cardinal and intermediate directions.

Second trimester students - explore the social and economical development in Minnesota during the post-industrial era.  They should be studying their practice maps for the final map test on February 26

Week of February 9:

First trimester students – continue study of the impact of the fur trade on the people and environment of Minnesota (chapter 5) and begin an examination of the treaty of 1851 and its effects on the Dakota and the settlement of Minnesota (chapter 6).  There will be no homework this week.

Second trimester students – continue looking at the how natural resources, machines, and people affected the development of Minnesota’s early industries and begin an overview of the post-industrial era in our state.  Homework is to continue studying practice maps for the final map test (the test will be given on February 26).










Week of February 2:
First trimester students – begin looking at the importance of the fur trade (chapter 5) and how it worked.  Homework will be to draw sketches of the chapter 5 vocabulary terms.  The assignment will be started in class on Tuesday and will be due Friday.  

Second trimester students – begin study of the development of the milling, lumbering, and mining industries in Minnesota (chapter 11).   Homework will be to make a “product list” of items currently in homes from the companies discussed in the chapter.  It will be due Friday.

Week of January 26:

First trimester students – Students will continue study of Chapter 4, “the Ojibwe” and then compare and contrast the cultures of the Dakota and Ojibwe.  Homework will be to study for the test given the week of February 2.

Second trimester students –Students will be concluding their study of Chapter 9, “Minnesota’s Civil War.”  They will also be creating a “practice map” that they should use to study for the final map test at the end of the trimester.  Homework is to study their practice maps.

Week of January 19:

First trimester students – Students will read an article about the presidential inauguration and examine information about Martin Luther King, Jr and civil rights.  They will also continue study of Chapter 4, “The Ojibwe.”   Homework will be to complete the worksheets on civil rights and Martin Luther King, Jr. if they weren’t finished in class.

Second trimester students – Students will read an article about the presidential inauguration and examine information to learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil rights.  They will also be continuing their study of Chapter 9, “Minnesota’s Civil War.”  Homework will be to complete the worksheets on civil rights and Martin Luther King, Jr. if they weren’t finished in class.


Week of January 5:

First trimester students – review chapter 3 “The Dakota” and begin looking at the impact of the Ojibwe on the fur trade and the story of their migration through the Great Lakes region.  Homework will be to complete the vocabulary sheet to go with chapter 4 “The Ojibwe”.  It will be due Friday, January 9th.  Students will take an open book test for chapter 3 on Wednesday.


Second trimester students – review chapter 8 “The Civil War” with a focus on the vocabulary that goes with the chapter.  Homework will be to complete the vocabulary sheet.  It is due Wednesday, January 7th.  An open book test on chapter 8 will be given on Thursday.




Week of December 15:

First trimester students will continue learning about Dakota culture.  An in-class activity will be to make a parfleche using paper bags (donated by Hagberg’s Country Market in Lake Elmo).  Students should be sure to bring colored pencils, markers, or crayons to class on Tuesday or Wednesday.  There will be no homework assignment.

Second trimester students will continue their study of the Civil War and its impact on Minnesota.  They will also examine a Civil War painting to determine the authenticity and value of a art as a primary source.  No homework will be assigned.



Week of December 8:

First trimester classes will begin study of Dakota culture, migration, and traditional lifestyle (Chapter 3, “The Dakota”).  Homework will be to complete a Minnesota crossword puzzle.  It is due Friday, December 12.  

Second trimester classes will finish looking at immigration to Minnesota during the territorial years and begin the study of the Civil War, its causes, and its impact on Minnesota (Chapter 8, “The Civil War”).  Homework will be to complete a map study to go with chapter 8.  It is due Friday, December 12.



Week of December 1:

First trimester students – students will begin the study of Minnesota history by reflecting on two questions – 1) What is Minnesota today? 2)How do we know about Minnesota’s history?  They should bring an example of  a primary source (first-hand, original object) that connects them to Minnesota to class on Friday, December 5.

Second trimester students -  students will begin studying chapter 7, “Minnesota’s Newcomers,” with a focus on the factors that brought immigrants to Minnesota during the territorial years.  Homework will be to pretend to be an immigrant and write a letter describing Minnesota and listing accomplishments in the new territory.  The letter will be due Friday, December 5.


No homework for the week of November 24.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Homework for the week of November 17 - complete worksheet on cardinal and intermediate directions on a map - due Friday, November 21.

Homework for the week of November 10 - draw sketches of the chapter 5 vocabulary terms 1)social status

11)vast  12)ration - remember to use the vocabulary sheet you completed in class to help you - due Friday, November 14.  

Homework for the week of November 3 - study for the test on Ojibwe and Dakota cultures; watch election coverage.

Homework for the week of October 27 - design an Ojibwe shield with at least 5 symbols that reflect their culture; color the symbols and write a title for your shield - due Friday, October 31.

Homework for the week of October 20 - complete "Who Can vote?" worksheet (students do not need to do #6 on the assignment) - due Friday, October 24.

No homework for the week of October 13.
