We have had a terrific start in the sixth grade! Your children came with such eager smiles on Tuesday, and I was encouraged to see those same eager smiles still in tact on Friday! I greatly appreciate all of you that have contributed items from my “wish list”. If you have not yet sent in the required supply of Kleenex and Clorox wipes please do so. You wouldn’t believe how much we go through in a school year.
If you have not emailed your email address, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you.
*Book orders are due on Friday, September 12th. There are some good selections and the books are tax-free!
Math
The students took the chapter one pretest this week. We have begun the first chapter on place value including the addition and subtraction of decimals. This chapter has a history of challenging students. Any extra assistance from home would be great.
Language Arts
The students took a spelling pretest today. During a typical 5-day week, spelling tests will be administered on Thursdays and spelling pretests will be administered on Fridays to offer ample study time. On Monday, we will read our first selection, “Hatchet”, by Gary Paulsen. In English, we will work on subjects and predicates as well as identifying different types of sentences.
Religion
This week we discussed how the life of Jesus is revealed in the bible. We will create prayers next week that will be consolidated into a classroom prayer book. You may be asked to edit and sign your child’s prayer if he/she does not have the opportunity to have it edited by me in class. There will be a short Chapter 1 quiz on Thursday. A review sheet will be sent home on Tuesday.
Science (Mrs. Bruce) lbruce@stjosephwsp.org
This past week we started our first unit titled "The Changing Earth". We talked about the Theory of Continental Drift and put together our own maps of Pangaea. Next week we will take a look at the Theory of Plate Tectonics. We will also map out where earthquakes and volcanoes have occurred to show plate boundaries.
Social Studies (Mrs. Salzman) asalzman@stjosephwsp.org
This week students created parallel timelines displaying personal events and historical events that have happened in the past eleven or twelve years. Next week students will learn about maps. Students will have a world map quiz on Thursday, September 11th. They will have a map to study from early next week. On Friday we will begin our study of ancient civilizations!
