Dear Parents and Guardians:

The students did a great job on their first whole week in Kindergarten.  We are still busy going over classroom rules and what we can and cannot do in the classroom.  Mrs. Hanson is our para-professional that will be working with us all year.  The students know that they are to listen to her just like they listen to me.

Please remember to be sending in only snacks that are on the safe snack list.  Students may bring a water bottle or juice to have with their snack each day.

Yesterday you received an Emmons Handbook.  On the title page inside, you will find the anti-bullying pledge and family sign-off for the handbook. We are asking families to return this slip to school as soon as possible. On September 4, we will take a count of the number of slips returned per grade level.  All of the children’s grades will be counted if they sign the family form. The grade level with the highest percentage return will get a frozen treat with lunch on Friday, Sept 5!  So please return those forms ASAP.

*September 4th is Curriculum Night.  I hope you can all join us.

*No school on Monday.  Happy Labor Day!

Monday:    We began centers today.  Each table has a different activity for the students to complete.  They are given a little check-off list to keep track of which table they have been to and which one they still need to visit.  Centers are mostly literacy based.  Students are able to work at their own pace to complete the task.  While students are working in centers, I pull small groups to my back table to do guided reading.  At this time, when students are pulled to my back table, we are busy working on the letters that are introduced that week.

We began the Imagery Phase of our letter system we use here at school.  We learned the picture names for the letters c, o, a, and d.

In Math we were introduced to measurement comparisons through a partner activity.

Tuesday:    In centers we played two letter recognition games and had a writing center where we wrote/drew pictures to help people get to know us better.

In Math we were introduced to pattern blocks.

In Pegasus, our reading series, we began Lesson 1.  We sorted picture using sound discrimination for the letters c, b, and m.

We began handwriting.  We learned how to properly hold our pencils and write the letter c.

Wednesday:  In centers we had a math center where we worked on counting and matching with the correct number, spelling our names, and putting our classmates’ names with faces.

In Math we were introduced to counting and one-to-one correspondence through multisensory activities.

We reviewed the picture names for the letters we learned on Monday.

Thursday:  In centers we worked on counting to six, used environmental print to show students they are already readers, and practiced modeling numbers.

In Math we were introduced to the concept of zero, the word zero, and the number “0.”

We played Letter Limbo in Pegasus today.

Friday:    In centers we worked on letter knowledge, wrote our first writing piece that we use to track students’ writing and drawing progress each month, and played a name game.

In Math we were introduced to the numbers 1-9 in a variety of activities.

We played a game to review the letters and their picture names we learned on Monday.
