Dear 8th Grade Parents,
The final exam will be Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13. After the exam we will complete the Probability and Statistics chapters at the end of the book and prepare for the Six Flags Math and Science Day on Wednesday, May 28. Information on cost and the permission slip are in an attachment below.
I am sincerely interested in keeping our algebra program in a position where it will best prepare our math students for high school programs. If any of you would be so kind as to share your 8th grader’s score on the algebra proficiency test from Loyola, Regina or Notre Dame with me, it would be most appreciated. All information will be kept confidential, and will be used to help me prepare future 8th graders for these tests.
I would like to make a brief comment on expectations for the Math and Science Day. I realize that not all children like amusement park rides. Therefore, no child will be required to go on any ride. Most mathematical computations can be made from observations and measurements taken without actually getting on a ride. Those who in fact ride the roller coasters can share acceleration information with students who are not interested in being on the ride. I know that this is an expensive field trip, but an amusement park offers some fascinating opportunities to study the Laws of Physics, as well as to perform calculations that use algebraic logic and mathematical formulas.
Sincerely,
Monica Cassidy
