Miss Turner’s Class Notes

Who is Miss Turner really?
Well, my educational background it pretty interesting.  I graduated from Stagg High School back in 1995 and went to Moraine Valley Community College for 2 years because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. After 2 years, I transferred to Northern Illinois University and completed a degree in Deafness Rehabilitation Counseling. I knew that I wanted to help others. I worked as a Social Services Director at a local nursing home facility and then became involved with the Early Intervention Program in Illinois. I worked with children ages birth to 3yrs with developmental delays and their families.  After some time, I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. I found a wonderful program at Saint Xavier University and received my teaching degree along with my Masters in Education. I was lucky to student teach here at Palos East in 4th grade and applied for a job as soon as I graduated from SXU.  I was placed in 5th grade and the rest is history!  I love being a 5th grade teacher at Palos East!

What does 5th grade study?

Spelling:  Each week our class has a spelling list to learn.  We have a spelling packet that is due by Thursday.  Our spelling tests are on Friday.  There are 20 regular words and 5 challenge words each week.

Language Arts:  We learn something new each week in grammar.  We follow the Harcourt Reading Series and add in extra practice as needed.
Writing:  We journal every day in class.  As the year progresses, we will be writing different types of essays like narrative, expository, and persuasive.

Reading:  We use the Harcourt Reading Series.  Each week we read a new story in class.  We discuss different elements of a story and study the different genres.  We also fit in a novel as a whole class here and there.  Our class participated in the 5th grade genre program.  Each quarter we are required to read a certain number of books in a certain genre.  We are required to complete a book in the bag or a genre form.  At the end of the year, the 5th grade hosts an Academy Awards of Books!  Favorite books are nominated and can win an award!

Math:  We switch for math each day.  Every class follows the same curriculum.  Some classes will move at a faster pace than others.  During the year, we cover measurement, data analysis (stats and probability), algebra, geometry, and continue to work on our number sense.

Science:  Science is very hands on in 5th grade.  Our units include, microscopic life, electricity, body systems, and of course our study of comets which leads to our awesome field trip to the Challenger Learning Center where we go on a simulated space mission!
Our class will be piloting a special unit this year!  More info to come!

Social Studies:  The units we study in social studies are map skills, exploration, the 13 colonies, the Revolutionary War, and parts of the Constitution.

Miss Turner's Class would like to welcome our newest edition! Her name is CORTANA and she is a black gerbil. Our class had the idea in a class meeting to get a class pet.  As a group, we decided to all pitch in $2.00 to buy the gerbil and some supplies.  Everyone will be pitching in to help keep Cortana's cage clean. If you stop by our room, you may see Cortana rolling around inside her blue ball for exercise! At the end of the school year, we will be choosing a responsible student to keep Cortana!

I can't believe we are in the 4th quarter!
Please talk to your child about their genre projects.
Each student has been assigned a date for their last book in the bag presentation. I gave each person a reminder to take home. All other genre projects are due no later than May 19th.
