CLASSROOM CAPERS....
8th Religion: The 8th graders have already begun preparation for their Confirmation. Students have chosen their ministry, deciding between altar serving and being a choir member. The Sunday Mass Attendance/Reflection sheets are due every Monday, with the proper signatures and a brief reflection on the Gospel and homily to be written on the back. Father Dennis and Father Li have started coming into the classroom, setting aside Friday afternoons to spend with the 8th graders.
Literature:
8th – This fall the 8th graders have been reading several works that represent the theme Coming of Age. Their main reading in this genre has been The Red Badge of Courage, written by Stephen Crane. The next major novel the class will be reading is To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.
7th – The 7th grade has been working with the theme What I AM, What I Want to Be. This included works by Emily Dickinson, Benedict Cosgrove, Rosa Parks, and Amy Tan. This month the theme will shift to Winds of Change, featuring the classic tale Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving.
6th – The 6th grade is working on the first theme in the literature book, titled Where Do I Belong. Several short stories, poems, and biographies have been read, including works by Carl Sandburg and Alice Walker. The students have been working on a project connected to the story The All American Slurp, creating three-dimensional dinner settings of their favorite meals.
5th – The 5th graders are well on their way into the second unit of our reader. The first unit covered such stories as The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and a selection from the KIDS DISCOVERY SERIES entitle Tornadoes. As each new story unfolds, students identify the elements of plot using the Roller Coaster Plot Element chart.
Grammar: All grades continue to review the parts of speech. Grades 8 – 6 have reviewed nouns & pronouns, simple verbs, and adjectives & adverbs. They are currently working on prepositions. The 5th grade has reviewed simple sentence structure, including identifying the subject and verb in sentences. All grammar is done with the intent to strengthen writing skills. Students have been practicing the outline form, as well as reviewing the writing process.
OPERA: Grades 3 – 8 will be attending a special performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, on Thursday, October 9th. We will be leaving in the morning around 8:45 a.m., returning in time for lunch by 12:00 p.m. Students are to be in full uniform. All the classes have been prepped for this performance by Mrs.LoPiccolo. It should be a good learning experience for all!
8TH GRADE REMINDERS....
- Please remember to sign the brown envelope and return the next day. This is an important link between the school and home. Many students are forgetting to bring the brown envelope back the next day. If this becomes a repeated action, a detention will be issued.
- Students have been advised of the cleaning schedule. The schedule rotates by the week. Two students cover the hot lunches and 8th grade homeroom cleaning, while four students work with K & 1st grade during recess and clean 2nd grade after school. It is important that everyone do their part.
- We are only in the month of October and several students have already become lax in Mass attendance. Remember...a criteria for being confirmed is regular Sunday Mass attendance.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST....
Thanks to all the 8th and 7th graders and their parents for helping make the car wash a success. We had a perfect weather day. Let’s hope the day of our trip will be as great!
Until next month....have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
