CLASSROOM CAPERS....
Literature: 5th – Students have just completed the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. These last weeks of school the class returns to the reader and the Unit 6 theme, Crossroads. Readings for this unit include a play version of the classic tale Rip Van Winkle.
6th – Students have completed the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond, a wonderful example of historical fiction. We will now turn our attention to the genre of drama, reading the play version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. This story is a perfect fit with the unit theme To Strange Places.
7th – Students have read The Legend of Buddy Bush by Shelia P. Moses. Now they are reading the follow-up book, The Return of Buddy Bush. This novel continues the story of Goodwin “Buddy” Bush, as told through the eyes of the young narrator, Pattie Mae Sheals. Both stories are excellent examples of the theme Coming of Age.
8th – The 8th graders are immersed in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The class has been keeping track of the unique characters, twists of plot & subplot, and the theme of love in its many guises....all flavored with the dramatic language of the Bard! This work does indeed offer something for everyone to enjoy. I hope this first taste of Shakespeare will encourage students to read more of his works.
Religion: The 8th graders will be working on a unit about the vocations of the religious life & the priesthood, the lay apostolate, and marriage & the family. The last units will discuss the role of Christians in the world.
WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIP....The trip this year went very well, with the weather cooperating up until our return flight home! Upon return to school, students wrote a reflection/critique about their “D.C.” experiences. Each had a favorite exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Native American Museum, a favorite monument or sight, and a favorite activity. Plenty of pictures were taken, especially during the Ghost Tour (Kristian is our “orbs” specialist!). We each have our memories of this trip, but even better is that the class shared these together.
SOME REMINDERS....
Books: All text books will be checked at the end of the year. If any book has been lost or damaged, students will pay a fee.
Finals: The dates and schedule of finals are to be announced. Students will receive a copy of the schedule.
Graduation: Graduation will take place on Sunday, June 1st, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Students are expected to dress appropriately. The guidelines given for Confirmation are also in place for Graduation (students will be wearing a cap & gown, so the same outfit could be worn). White dress shoes and sheer or pastel stockings are a Graduation requirement for the girls. Appropriate behavior is imperative, and no balloons are allowed in church. Everyone’s cooperation will help this special event run smoothly.
LAST, BUT NOT LEAST....Happy Mothers’ Day to all the mothers in our lives. May God’s Blessings always be upon you!
