Week of Oct.6

The children were really excited about our unit on monarch butterflies.  I think they all learned a lot.  They will be bringing home the books they made on monarchs this week.  I hope you will all get a chance to read your son/daughter's book.  They did a great job on these.  I was so proud of how hard they worked.

Two exciting highlights from the unit: Watching a video in Computer class where they could see a monarch caterpillar making a chrysalis and later emerging as a monarch butterfly.  It was amazing footage all filmed by a young girl and her father from Mesquite, Texas.  The monarchs travel through Mesquite on their way to Mexico.  The second highlight was having two monarch butterflies in our classrooom, so we could see their body parts up-close.  The children used hand-held magnifying glasses to observe the butterflies.

Plans for this week:

Reading- We will be reading a nonfiction story called Ants.  The children will see up-close photographs of ants and learn how ants live and work together.  They will realize that ants and people do some of the same things (walk, climb, lift, dig).

The high frequency words are:  make, they, walk.  The children will learn about noticing important details in a story.  Details tell more about a character, place, or event.  They help readers picture in their minds what is happening.

Spelling- The spelling words this week are:  in, pin, pig, wig, win, fin, am, pan, yes, and.  The test will be Friday, Oct. 10.

Handwriting- We will learn how to make the following letters:  w, y, j, r.

Math- We will work on writing the numbers 21-24.  The children will learn their math double facts (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, and 5+5).  They will be bringing home flash cards this week.  Please help them memorize their addition double facts to 10.  We will be using geoboards to make rectangles.  The children will learn to identify rectangles by the number of sides and angles it has.  We will also be using pattern blocks this week and identifying attributes of pattern blocks.

We will have a Math assessment on story problems, counting pennies, ordinal position of first, second, third, and identifying a number between two numbers.

Religion- In Chapter 7 the children will learn that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity.  The Holy Spirit is our teacher and helper.  They will learn about the Holy Trinity.  They will make and wear a Holy Spirit Shield.

Social Studies- We will learn about Christopher Columbus and the important role he played in discovering our country.  We will make a class book to help us remember Christopher Columbus' voyage to America!
