RELIGION - May 1, 2008
The 7th graders have completed and turned in their Pope project which was based on research, some decision making as to whom to choose and their effort in finding specific information. It is always interesting to learn new information about those who have been involved in the history of our faith.
We are working on Chapter 14, The Church, The Body of Christ. The students all have their study guide for the chapter and should have their notebook created to reflect such. They have vocabulary and questions which deal with the content of the chapter. I do expect all of them to complete the work. This is accomplished through joining in the classroom discussion as we read and discuss the material and also by reading the assigned work and seeking answers.
As assistance to you as parents, you should be able to check your child's grade every single day! They were taught to keep their grades recorded for each of their subjects and in religion you will find that information in the back of the notebook under Grading Procedure. This is a major responsibility of the child and a learning step in being accountable for their work and their actions. I realize how difficult it is when your child does not do well; however, this is a choice they are making and a hard lesson to learn.

I am returning last week's quiz to them today, Monday, May 12. I will add an extra point for each correction made - they must show their work and the test must be signed by a parent. Hold on to those quizzes - I will be using some of that material on this week's quiz as well.
We will finish chapter 7 this week and spend time reviewing the major concepts of graphing. The test over the chapter will be Friday, May 16.
I have room for about 3 more students in the summer math camp. If you are interested be sure and send in the registration form. If you need another one just give me a call here at school and I will see that you get one. It is a two week program held July 28th - August 8th here at Ascension. It is a perfect opportunity for the students to review the concepts of pre-algebra and look ahead to the challenges of algebra. We will also spend time preparing for the math portion of the Iowa Basic Test.
It was necessary to reregister the online site. Now there is only an access code needed and it is BF6F129AB5 I hope this works for everyone.

LITERATURE -
Students will complete their projects for "Touching Spirit Bear" this week. Their poems will be due on Wed. Their totem poles will be due on Friday. We will work on one more Vocab. lesson (21 and 22). Due to the extra activities this week, assignments will be due on Wed. and Fri. with a test on Tues. May 20th.
We will also take time to read one of the plays in our text as a final selection.
Students should continue to fill in their reading logs for this last quarter and will still need to complete 2 AR quizzes for fourth quarter. Reading Log and AR quizzes will be due on May 20.
Monday: School play
Tuesday: Plan Descriptive Paragraph
Wednesday: Complete Descriptive Paragraph
Thursday: Write Expository Paragraph
Friday: Peer editing and submit one paragraph
The second part of the book is where we spend about two-thirds of the school year, working on grammar. Most of what we cover is review from previous years, with new, slightly more complicated material added as we go through each chapter.
Please encourage your children to study a little every night, especially the evenings after they have taken notes in class. It will give them an opportunity to ask questions if they realize they really do not understand a section, before we go on to the next lesson. Some of the chapters are long, and the students really cannot memorize all of the material in the one or two nights before the tests. Occasionally, I will give pop quizzes to be sure students are studying the material a little at a time, rather than waiting until just before tests.

SCIENCE May 18,2008
We are down to counting single days. Our study of plants has drawn to a close. Some of the students brought their projects home to plant. Hopefully they did just that. We are not going to have a test on this information but will continue to wrap up subjects that are important to Life Science students. Be sure to check out the list of things that the science department can use.It will be included in your report card envelope. Have a safe summer.
