                  OUR VOLUNTEERS

We are so grateful for our volunteers  and their dedication to the children of Ascension.

The Ascension Volunteers shelve books, check books in and out, decorate the display windows, dust and clean, and do many other tasks.

The most important thing they do is make the Ascension Library welcoming to all the students.

We don't know what we'd do without them.

Our volunteers this year are:

Christine Eilerman

               INSPIRING READING
           FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS

We have some good books for your spiritual reading.
They are kept in the Teachers' Lounge,

If parents are interested they may check them out.  Just ask Miss Fletcher or Mrs. Lynch for the titles.

CHRIST THE LORD OUT OF EGYPT: A Novel by Anne Rice which we bought.

THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING: A Memoir by Joan Didion.

TEN PRAYERS GOD ALWAYS SAYS YES TO.  Divine Answers to Life's Most Difficult Problems   Author Anthony DeStefano

Ask in the library for a complete list of titles.
You never know when some lines from a book will inspire or comfort you.

                 PARENTS, PLEASE READ

Please be advised of a movie and book currently being marketed in St. Louis.  The book and movie are "The Golden Compass."  The movie stars Nicole Kidman.

We have been advised by the Catholic Education Office that the theme is anti-Catholic and promotes ideas contrary to our Faith and teachings.

We suggest that you as parents research information on this book/movie prior to exposing it to your children and families.

We will not place the book series in our school library or bring the movie into school.  We do suggest you check this out before making a purchase.

        THE LOVE OF LEARNING,
        THE SEQUESTERED NOOKS,
AND THE SWEET SERENITY OF BOOKS.

            HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

      "WITHOUT PICTURES OR CONVERSATIONS?"

                  LEWIS CARROLL

                  WEEKLY ROUTINES

Students come in as a class every week.  One week they check out books.  The next week is a lesson or activity.

Note:  First Graders check out books, but do not take them home.

            PARENTS, PLEASE READ

SOMETIMES ASCENSION LIBRARY BOOKS ARE ACCIDENTALLY RETURNED TO THE BOOKMOBILE OR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

IF THIS HAPPENS, CALL:
SACHS LIBRARY  636-728-0001
DANIEL BOONE   636-227-9630
HEADQUARTERS:  314-994-3300

THESE LIBRARIES KEEP A MASTER LIST OF BOOKS THAT HAVE BEEN RETURNED TO THEM BUT BELONG TO OTHER LIBRARIES.

DECORATE A WINDOW IN THE LIBRARY!

If a family has a collection they would like to exhibit in the library display windows, contact Miss Fletcher EXT. 29.  You may design and set up your display.
Some families have memorabilia and photos from  vacations.
We try to tie in books from our collection with the subject in your display.  You can plan the display and choose the books. We can help you choose the books.

HELP!!!

We are looking for a set of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn  bookends.

We are looking for a statue of St. Louis.  We want a copy of the statue that is in front of the St. Louis Art Museum.  The name of that statue is
"The Apotheosis of St. Louis."

"IT IS A GREAT THING TO START LIFE
WITH A SMALL NUMBER OF REALLY GOOD BOOKS
   WHICH ARE YOUR VERY OWN."

                 SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

A FUN LITERARY GETAWAY

A visit to Hannibal is an enriching experience for boys and girls, parents and grandparents.  Go to www.hanmo.com.  That is the website of the Hannibal  Chamber of Commerce.  It is an excellent website!

Don't miss the house where Sam Clemens grew up.
Then visit the Laura Hawkins house right across the street.  It is said that she was the girl that led Mark Twain to create Becky Thatcher.

There are two excellent bookstores in town.

  USING YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY

THE MARK TWAIN and THE TRUMAN PROGRAM

Some of our students will be required to read Mark Twain or a Truman nominated books.  These books are chosen by the Missouri Association of School Librarians.
Missouri students in grades four through eight are eligible to vote for their favorite book if they had read, or have had read to them, at least FOUR of the titles on the current master list.

For more on the Mark Twain and Truman nominated books go to www.maslonline.org/awards

                Mark Twain and Truman Nominees
                   2008-2009 School Year

To see the current list click on the following website: www.maslonline.org

The Ascension Library has purchased one copy of each title. Some 7TH and 8TH Grade students may need to visit the public library to get the book they want.  Sachs and Daniel Boone have multiple copies of each Mark Twain and Truman nominated book, AND they may be requested from any branch.

DID YOU KNOW that the bookmobile that serves Ascension ALWAYS has multiple copies of the Mark Twain nominees for the CURRENT school year.

DID YOU KNOW that books may be requested online?

DID YOU KNOW that books may be checked out for a month at the public library?
Just ask for "VACATION CHECKOUT."

          DISPLAY AREA FOR THE CURRENT
           MARK TWAIN and TRUMAN BOOKS

Mrs. Ann Lynch has set up a special display area for this year's Mark Twain Nominees.  It is right under the large picture of Tom and Huck.

  STUDENT CHOICES

Periodically we set up a special display in the library that says
                   "Chosen By. . . "

The books in this display case are books that three people/students recommend. Sometimes other students check out these books because they know the students who chose these books and might like what they like.

You would be amazed at how quickly these books are checked out.  We think it's because they are chosen  by our students!

  NEW ARRIVALS

See some of our new books in the library window.  They will be ready for check out soon.

              "READ, READ, READ!"

                     WILLIAM FAULKNER
