First Grade -- September 8 and 11, 2008

"WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL"

Welcome back to school, welcome back to school.
Can you clap* and count to eight?
Can you clap* and count to eight?
"1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8"

*pat, snap, jump, etc.

After learning the song students will be introduced to the correct way to play the following unpitched instruments:
        1.  wood block
              2.  tambourine
              3.  cowbell
              4.  triangle
              5.  hand drum
              6.  guiro.
Each student will have a chance to play each of the above instruments before we add the music to the song.  During the song there will be a rotation set up so that the students will move from instrument to instrument while singing.

"TWO LITTLE APPLES"

Two little apples hanging on a tree.
Two little apples smiling down at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could!
Down came the apples, Mmm! were they good!

We will use this speech piece to introduce the idea of form.  The experience will cover both speaking and moving.  Our stage of learning will be imitation.

"CLAP, CLAP, CLAP YOUR HANDS"

Clap, clap, clap your hands.
Clap your hands together.

The object of this simple song is to prepare the student for learning to sing sol, mi and for reviewing pulse.  The concepts that we hope to develop are melody and rhythm.  The experiences will include singing and moving.  The stages of learning to be covered will be imitation and exploration.

MOVEMENT GAME

The students will walk while the teacher plays pulse on hand drum.  The students will freeze when they hear a certain drum beat.  We will repeat several times at different tempi, encouraging students to explore different pathways and directions.

"I THINK MUSIC’S NEAT"

I think music’s neat.
I can keep a steady beat.
1,  2,  3,  4,  5,  6,  7,  8.

This song continues the students’ study of pulse and rhythm.  The teacher will speak the poem while patting pulse, the students will copy.  They will then play a game in which each student will be given the opportunity to lead the other students in the pulse activity.

"HICKORY, DICKORY, DOCK"

Hickory, dickory, dock!  The mouse ran up the
     clock.
The clock struck one, the mouse ran down.
Hickory, dickory, dock!

The students will review the nursery rhyme with the addition of actions.  We will then discuss the vocal qualities of high/low, up/down.  The students will perform the rhyme independently while the teacher plays wood block.

"MONKEY SEE AND MONKEY DO"

Oh my goodness, I declare, there’s a monkey in a
         chair!
Copy him because it’s true, monkey see and monkey do!

In a circle formation the students will take turns choosing the action that will show pulse.  After the song, the class will slowly count to eight while the student chooses another student to lead the class in pulse actions.  The students will repeat the song, all singing “Oh” with a fermata until the new leader is ready.  The game continues until all students will have a turn at leading.

We have also started work on two songs:  “A Mouse and A Moose and A Little Green Frog” and “Don’t Get Burned.”  The words to these two songs are given below.

A MOUSE AND A MOOSE AND A LITTLE GREEN FROG

A mouse and a moose and a little green frog
Went to the swamp where they sat on a log.
“Let’s play a game,” said the mouse to the moose.
“Let’s be a train with a red caboose.”
     (make train sounds)

The mouse and the moose and the little green frog
Played all day in the swamp on the log.
“Let’s play a drum,” said the moose to the frog.
“Let’s play a drum on our swampy log.”
     (play “drums” rhythmically, but freely)

The mouse and the moose and the little green frog
Soon got tired in the swamp on the log.
“Let’s take a nap,” said the frog to the mouse.
“Let’s pretend that our log is a house.”
     (make snoring/sleeping sounds)

decrescendo to end
A mouse and the moose and the little green frog.  (make train sounds)
A mouse and the moose and the little green frog.  (play “drums”)
A mouse and the moose and the little green frog.  (make snoring/sleeping sounds)
A mouse and the moose and the little green . . .
opt. solo:  Ribbit!

DON'T GET BURNED!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

Have a smoke detector to warn of smoke and flames.
Know where all the exits are so you can get away!  Oh!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

If you catch on fire, don't run around and shout.
Stop and drop and roll around until the flames go out!  Oh!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

Never play with matches and always use your wit.
Find out if a door is warm before you open it!  Oh!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

If there is a fire, and smoke has filled the air,
you should crawl close to the ground
because it's cooler there!  Oh!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

Don't get burned!  Don't get burned!
Have a plan -- a way to escape.
Don't get burned!  Don't get burned if there is a fire!

Have a great week!

God bless!
