SCHOOLNOTES - MR. WINN
UPDATE - NOVEMBER 5
We are still working on notes on the 1st and 2nd string.
1st string - E F G
2nd string - B C D
ODE TO JOY is the song we are working on now. It uses these six notes. Once we get past this goal things usually move a little faster. It is important that everyone gets the fundamental concept of how to play individual notes and read music. It is like learning the secret code. Once each student figures out how to break the code then we can really start making music.

MUSIC NOTES - MR. WINN
5th GRADE GUITAR

UPDATE - OCT 22
Each class we start with a warm-up excercise that plays 3 notes on each of the six strings. This teaches the first and third fingers of the left hand to be more agil on the fretboard and to get used to playing on all of the strings.
Guitar class is now working with reading notes on two strings.
The first string is E - F - G. The second string is B - C - D. The new song is "Ode to Joy". (Joyful, Joyful) . This will take a couple of weeks and then we keep adding notes on the next string till we get all six of the strings. E-B-G-D-A-E.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 24
Today we watched a video showing how to strum and play chords. There was also a lot of information about how to hold a guitar and how to hold the pick. How to play simple chords and more complex 6 string chords. Some information on tuning, however, in class all the guitars are tuned before the students come to class. We will cover tuning toward the end of the school year. In these first few months I like to keep things moving and tuning takes a lot of time. Keep practicing!

MUSIC NOTES - MR. WINN

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 1
All 5th Grade students have had their first class of guitar. Everyone learned the names of the guitar, how to hold it, and how to play their first notes. They learned the names of the strings E-G-B-D-A-E. They played on each of the strings. Over the next few weeks we will learn how to read music and play easy melodies. All students seem to be very enthusiastic and will have a lot of fun learning to play guitar. Refer back to this page each week to check on all the new activities.
