WEEKLY UPDATE - OCTOBER 9
The Sixth Grade have all learned to read notes with both the right and left hand on piano. The instruments we use in class are Casio Keyboards. We are using 12 with two students sharing a keyboard together. We are now playing with both hands reading music in the treble and bass cleff. Some songs that we are playing are: The Saints Go Marching In and Kumbayah.

AUGUST 2008 Welcome to 6th Grade Music. Check this page for updates about 6th grade piano/keyboard. COURSE/CURRICULUM SIXTH GRADE KEYBOARD The students in the class will have the use of Casio keyboards. The class meets on a once a week schedule throughout the entire year. The basic keyboard course will be taught keeping in mind the varying abilities of each sixth grader and sensitive to their individual development. Contents to be covered will range from the most basic skills all the way to playing duets for the more advanced students. All students should finish the class with the knowledge of the piano keyboard to include: · The ability to sight-read simple melodies and rhythms. · The ability to accompany those melodies with simple chords. · Use both hands on the keyboard. · Basic music notation. · Key signatures. · Scales. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: This class will encourage, challenge and stimulate the musical interests of its participants. This class will be an asset to the student’s ongoing musical learning. It will add the students individual musical development and enable him or her to reach a global perspective on the place of music within everyday life. It will awaken an interest in further exploration of the keyboard family of instruments along with the tremendous history and repertoire that it represents. ASSESSMENT: Daily group playing checkups for the entire class will be conducted as well as individual performance. Daily grading is based on: · Keeping a steady beat. · Playing the correct notes. · Using correct rhythms. · Using the proper fingering. · Paying attention and following instructions. Home practice is suggested and recommended if an instrument is available. Written music theory quizzes will be given as needed. The main objective is to positively promote the fun and enjoyment that one can experience when learning a new instrument. Advanced students will be given the opportunity to perform on their own and in duets with the teacher or other students. A goal of this class is to enable its participants to play piano music of their own choosing from various sources.
