QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world" - Albert Einstein

Throughout the year I will be adding helpful study hints and informational websites that offer strategies for students or parents!

FUN INTERACTIVE MATH WEBSITE!!!
www.multiplication.com  has lots of fun games to practice multiplication facts. These games keep kids motivated while learning their facts and increasing their speed.

GREAT WEBSITE FOR PARENTS!!
www.schwablearning.org serves as a parent's guide to helping kids with learning difficulties. Check it out!

ANOTHER GREAT WEBSITE!!!
Check out www.readingrockets.org for some great ideas to get your kids reading and writing!

HOMEWORK CHECKLIST FOR PARENTS

*Provide a quiet,well-lit space, away from distractions and with all the right study materials:paper, pens, pencils, books, ect.

*Try to find a separate place for each of your children,or schedule quiet times for homework.

*Create a regular schedule, allowing adequate study and free time.

*Limit TV time and do not allow it during homework.

*Be available to answer questions. Try doing a couple of problems together, then watch as your child tries the next few.

*Avoid simply giving an answer. Instead, ask questions that let your child see the problem in smaller, sequential steps.

*Review completed and graded assignments.Discuss errors to be sure your child understands the material.

*Check your child's assignment notebook nightly.

*Check teachers' websites weekly for assignments and test/quiz dates.

*Contact your child's teacher if the amount or type of homework is overwhelming or seems too difficult for your child.

When parents and teachers work collaboratively, the child wins!!

MEMORIZING TECHNIQUES

Acronyms-An acronym is an invented combination of letters. Each letter is a cue to, or suggests, an item you need to remember.
Examples:
To remember the order of math operations, just recall PEMDAS- parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.

To remember the colors of the rainbow in order, recall a man's name  ROY G. BIV- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

Many other memory techniques are listed on the website, www.studygs.net/memory/

Check it out!!

Hey Parents!
I found a nifty little gadget in one of my educational catalogues for those kids who have weak spelling skills. It's called Spelling Ace Spelling Corrector. A student can enter a creative spelling, such as 'jiraf' and it will print 'giraffe'. I thought the price was reasonable too, $17.95. I plan on getting one for the resource room. If you'd like more information please contact me at school.

GET ORGANIZED!

1.Plan Ahead
2.Make A To Do List
3.Write Down Assignments And Due Dates
4.Study A Little Bit Each Day To Stay Ahead
5.Stick To Your Schedule And Commitments
6.Reward Yourself With Some Free Time!

TEST TAKING TIPS

Conversation Talk with your child about the importance of tests.
Confidance Prior to the test, help instill confidence.Praise your child for how hard they have studied and worked on class assignments.
Communication with Teacher Always discuss your child's academic situation with the teacher. It helps you understand and provide what your child needs.
The Right Environment Having an effective test-prep routine is just as important as having one for homework.Begin studying several nights before the test.
Consistency,Repetition,Reinforcement Test taking will be much less stressful if you follow a consistent routine. To help reinforce what your child is learning, make a point of using the vocabulary words, math formaulas, and other study topics in everyday activites. The more these become familiar, the better your child will do on tests. Perspective Didn't do well on a test? Not to worry! One bad test is hardly the end of the world. Focus on solutions. Don't put too much emphasis on test scores, they are merely one ingredient of the final grade. Other components are also accounted for:homework, class participation, and overall classroom behavior and attitude. It may take time to improve test scores, but developing good study habits will deliver results over time~and also give your child an invaluable edge later in life.
