Apparel & Textiles

Apparel & Textiles is a "project" based class. It is imparative that students have something to work on everyday. If there are problems getting materials/supplies please contact Ms. Renoux immediately. Projects can be clothing, accessories, or quilts. I am open to most projects as long as they involve textiles; however students should check with me before purchasing supplies for unusual projects. Students will be required to complete 3 projects each nine weeks unless advised otherwise based on the projects size or difficulty (for example - large quilts with many pieces generally count for at least 2 projects). All projects must be done in class!

I would like to share a little about supplies and sewing clothing in general. There was a time when sewing clothing was less expensive than purchasing ready made clothing, unfortunately that is no longer true in most cases. Most sewists now make garments and other textile articles as a creative outlet and/or to express their style with unique, one of a kind creations. Purchasing quality fabrics, notions, and patterns can add up however watching for sales and careful shopping can certainly cut down on the expense. I will post notices of sales in the classroom. JoAnn Fabrics, Hancock Fabrics, and Hobby Lobby all sell fabric, patterns, and notions. Unfortunately, the Walmart stores closest to Andover no longer sell fabric. There are several quilt shops in town that have unique/different fabric, unfortunately those fabrics are often slightly more expensive than other places. Quilt shop fabrics are not "necessary" for quilt making, however I encourage students and families to explore the shops, even if it is just to look around and maybe get some ideas. Needlenook is a speciality shop that has wonderful fanrics/notions/patterns for undergarments, lingerie, and swimsuits. The owner is very knowledgeable (she teaches at conventions/seminars all around the US), friendly, and helpful.

The first week will involve bookwork and measurements. This will allow the student to become familiar with patterns and fabrics. After that we will be learning about the sewing machines used in the classroom.

Students should have supplies for their first project by 14 Jan. From that point on students will be working on their individual projects.

The final exam will involve both a short written exam as well as a small project for which supllies will be provided.

Basic Nutrition & Food Preparation
**All sections will have review questions / worksheets / graphic organizers to be completed in class and turned in for points. Test questions will come from this information as well as lecture material. We will be cooking approximately once a week. Food labs will focus on preparation techniques, technical reading, time management, as well as safety and sanitation. Students will have a textbook that they may leave in the classroom or take with them.

Community Service
Students will be particpating in community service at various locations off campus. This is a pass/fail class. Requirements for a passing grade are:
* participation (be there on time, sign in, do what needs to be done, notify your supervisor if you are going to be absent) Failure to sign in will result in an unexcused absence and a 2 hour detention - your supervisor will not be allowed to excuse your absence.
* weekly activity sheet (turn in every Friday)
* quarterly evalautions (give them to your supervisor a week in advance so they may evaluate your participation and return the form to me by the due date - late receipt will result in zero points)

Study Skills
Initially we will spend time reviewing tips for success. After that students will use the classtime to complete work assigned in other classes. Student that do not have assignments will have an option of reviewing/studying materials/textbooks from their other classes or doing some recreational readying.

This class is a pass/fail class and 1/2 credit hour is awarded for a passing grade. Grades are based on daily points that are awarded as follows:
3 points if working on a class assignment or reviewing course materials or 2 points for recreational reading,
1 point for having their agenda book filled out for all classes,
1 point for individual behavior.
Disrupting the class will result in zero points for the day.
