March 2008
March is a fast month with a lot going on:
March 17: No school
March 17, 18: Conferences
March 21,24,25: Easter Vacation
March 27: Spring Sing at the Middle School 6:30pm
March is a big science month. We will be studying animals, rocks, and matter. The children LOVE science and all the fun hands-on activities that go with it!
Our author of the month is Dr. Seuss. We celebrated his birthday on March 3rd. We rotated through all the kindergarten and first grade classrooms -- listening to Seuss stories and doing related activities.
HAPPY SPRING!!! SEE YOU AT CONFERENCES!!
February 2008
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
This month in math we will be working on area, volume, and other forms of measuring. For some online fun practicing math facts, click on "Fact Dash" or "That's a Fact" below. Students can practice with or without timers.
In Social Studies, we will be finding out about our Presidents and American symbols.
February is Dental Health Month. We will be learning about keeping our teeth clean and healthy. Click the "Dental Health games" link below to go play some fun, online dental games! We will be studying nutrition and healthy habits, too.
100th Day was a lot of fun! We rotated through all the kindergarten and first grade rooms, hearing 100 Day books, doing 100 exercises, stamping 100 stamps, building with 100 blocks, and counting to 100!
January 2008
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
January will be a busy month in first grade. Our author of the month is Jan Brett. We will begin with her book THE MITTEN and continue all month long to enjoy her words and her detailed illustrations. Check out the link to Jan Brett's website below for some awesome activities!
In math, we continue to forge ahead with our new Trailblazers math program. The children sure do enjoy math time each day! Ask your child about the game "Snakes Alive". A great big thank you for those of you helping your child with the math homework!
We will also be studying weather, penguins, and celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and 100th Day. Check out the cool penguin web cam at our own Omaha Zoo below!
December 2007
Happy Holidays! December is a special month in First Grade. We will be looking at various December holidays including Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Los Posadas, and Christmas.
December is also the month we begin spelling tests. We study word families and short vowel families. A list of 6 words will go home on Mondays. Please stick them on your refrigerator so you can ask your child to spell them each day. We will also work on them in class. On Fridays, we will have our spelling test.
Through December 12th, please send in canned goods for Pete's Feeders. This is a wonderful charity that distributes food to needy families in South Sioux City right before Christmas.
You can also send in a new toy for our Toys for Tots campaign. The Student Council is collecting toys for babies to teens for distribution before Christmas.
Christmas break is December 24-January 7. Please see that your child keeps reading over the holidays! THANK YOU!
November 2007
A great big "thank you" to all the families that attended conferences. Our class had 100% participation in conferences. It was so much fun to share all the positive things that are happening this year in first grade. Thank you again.
In November, we will be working on measuring and length in math.
November also marks the start of our red bag take-home reading program or "Share a Pair". Your child will bring home two books in the red bag. Please help him/her practice the leveled reading book. When he/she can read it, send it back to school to read to me. After that, I will send home two new books. The second book in the bag is just for sharing as a family. It does not have to be practiced by your child. You will see much growth in reading ability through this program.
Our author of the month is Robert Munsch. Please check out our link to his website at the bottom of this page. We enjoy going to his site and having him read his funny, funny books to us!
NO SCHOOL: November 22 & 23 for Thanksgiving vacation
October 2007
Welcome Fall!!
We had so much fun with our apple unit last week! We tasted apples and graphed our favorites. We made apple crisp. We made and ate a WHOLE APPLE TREE! Ask your child about the details!
As the leaves begin to fall and the days become cooler, we settle into some good learning in first grade.
In math, we are looking at tallying, even and odd numbers, and writing number sentences.
In science and social studies, we will be learning about fire safety, Christopher Columbus, and pumpkins.
We have adopted two soldiers in Iraq. They are Mrs. Robertson's nephew, Sam, and his buddy Kyle. We will be sending them letters, pictures, books, and posters.
On October 17th, all three first grades will be taking a field trip to the Sioux City Community Theatre for a performance of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (starring Mrs. Robertson's son - Joey!). The PTA has generously provided the money for tickets and we anticipate a fun outing!
Some dates to remember in October:
Oct. 9: Picture Day
Oct. 12: Homecoming Parade and Football game
Oct. 17: Field trip to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" play
Oct. 22 & 23: Parent teacher conferences
Oct. 22 & 26: No school
I look forward to visiting with all of you during parent/teacher conferences. What a good time for us to share the positive things that are happening this year in first grade!
September 2007
A-B-C-D-E First Grade is the place to be!
We are hard at it in First Grade. We are writing up a storm in our writer's workshop. The children are learning what it means to be authors! Every day we take up our writing folders and make an illustration and a story to go with it. The children are finding it easier and easier to come up with ideas.
Tic-Tac-Toe homework has gone home. It goes home on Mondays and children have all week to bring it back. I ask that they pick three activities to do at home during the week. However, many children choose to do all nine! Oh, how they love homework in First Grade!
Our first book orders have gone home and are due back to school on September 7th. Whether you have books at home, order from the book order, or go to the public library, I would like to encourage you to read with your child for 10-20 minutes EVERY NIGHT!! The benefits for your child and any younger siblings will be noticable.
Your child can practice reading our Word Wall Words by clicking on the word "Flashcards" above. The first 100 are for us. The second 100 are for second graders, the third 100 for third graders. But feel free to practice those, too!
We are off to a wonderful year -- you are invited to join us in the classroom any time!!
