Please check to be sure that your child is reading every night. This is so very important to many of the students in our class. The best way to improve reading skills is simply to read. If you have trouble getting your child to read at home, try reading with him/her. You read aloud a page and then your child reads aloud the next page. What a nice way to spend some time with your child! Nightly reading must be recorded on the reading calendar with the title, page numbers, and your initials. This calendar is to be turned in during the first week of the next month for a homework grade.
When we take a test, students note whether or not they have studied, where they have studied, and for how long. I am having them do this for two reasons. First, I want them to be accountable for a poor test grade if they did not study. Most importantly, I would like them to assess their study habits. If they are studying and still make a poor grade, then we need to look at their study habits. They may need to change the place they study or the amount of time spent studying. We may also have to look at the way they are studying and make changes there. It is very important for your child to develop good study habits in 5th grade so they can be successful in school.
