For the past couple of weeks, students have been working on some vocational skills in Language Arts and Math. We have integrated some real world situations into the academic area. Students have taken a vocabulary test on what I call "working words such as-job, career, paycheck, deduction, benefit, social security, etc." The purpose of this was to familiarize them with some of the things they will encounter when they enter the working world. They also will be able to work part time while going to school if they choose. I am reinforcing that.
Some of their assignments have had a working world feel. Each day they are doing a writing prompt with a topic of the day. The topic each day is as follows: Monday-Think of a way to help students do well at Judice Middle. Tuesday-Suppose A Famous Person you admire visited this school. What would you ask that person and why would you ask that person that?
Wednesday-If I had a million dollars.......
Thursday-There are many problems in the world. What do you think is the biggest problem and why do you think it is the biggest problem? What would you do to solve it? Friday-One Think I will Always Remember is.........
In addition, they will be doing vocabulary connections. This week we are doing geograhy connections along with connections dealing with Atoni van Leeuwenhook and how his ideas were originally ridiculed. Students are to write a short paragraph on how to relate to that as well in the geography realm on what they would do if they were early settler and they encountered an uninhabited island, and what they would do. They will given exercises to make connotations of words and complete sentences as well as some multiple choice questions.
Students will also be reading a novel aloud with the teacher. The novel is called "Peacebound Trains" It is based on a real life account of a Korean family escaping communist soldiers during the Korean War and coming to America. This will be interactive as the students will answer questions, discuss the happenings in the book. They will put their feelings into it and what they think and what they think will happen as they go through the story. They will take all of this and write a book report, which is due early next week.
Students have a Language Arts Binder. If they have not finished any assignments, they are to take the binder home and work on them. I have told them this, and they understand it. I am in the process of checking their binders and grading some of the assignments. One of the assignments is titled: The School Lunch Menu-Students will answer 10 questions about the menu and what is being served on a particular day of the week. The foods are divided into 5 categories. They have a key explaining that. They should have this done this week. There is another reading comprehension assignment dealing with the working world about raises for state employees. It comes from the Newspaper.
In math, students also have a separate binder dealing with Daily Math sheets, Math-General Lessons, and Math Real World. Each part of the binder is sectioned off. Students are responsible for keeping with the binder. There are two particular projects that need to be completed soon-(1) Super One Grocery Ad-The students are to answer word problems dealing with cost of a shopping trip. They are to figure the whole cost and compute sales tax. There is more than one shopping trip to compute. They are provided with calculators to do the assignment. (2) Figuring a visit to a restaurant-Students take a menu from a local restaurant and compute the cost of a set of meals. They are to get the information from a copy of the restaurant's menu. From their they are to compute the cost of the meal, sales tax, and 15% tip. These two assignments need to be finished by the end of the week. They are provided with calculators for both assignments.
Should you have any questions about these assignments, feel free to contact me at anytime. Thank you for your support and have a great week.
