Hello there,
Well, we’re almost there with only four and a half weeks left! I hope that your school year was as enjoyable as mine. Have a safe and relaxing summer!
J. Wallace James recently hosted ”Arts Under the Stars” on March 24. Over 40 participants joined in the drama room for a peek into what students have been learning in drama class. After learning how to transform into different object characters, parents and students became actors by performing Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed. The evening proved to be a fun event for all who attended!
Pre – K through 2nd Exploratory Drama:
These students are currently studying the four drama focus words: imagination, transformation, imitation, and concentration. Students learn how to work individually, with a partner, and in larger groups using the three drama tools: body, mind, and voice.
Parts of the story including characters and types of characters are inlcuded in the Pk-2nd drama curriuclum as well. Teamwork and cooperation are also skills that second graders master while in drama. Furthermore, drama skills are used to reinforce what is taught in our classrooms.
3rd Grade Exploratory Drama:
Third grade Drama students have been introduced to the three drama tools: body, mind, and voice. They will be using the drama skills learned in this class to present a performance during class time on Wednesday, May 20. Hope you will join us in the cafetorium!
4th Grade Drama Elective:
Fourth grade drama students have been working very hard memorizing scene selections from classic and contemporary plays. Recently, they performed these scenes incorporating drama skills that they have been learning about throughout the year. An Afternoon of Shorts will be performed in front of teachers and parents at the end of April. Students will be graded on such drama techniques as character development, expression, projection, articulation, teamwork and movement. After seeing the effort the students put into these scenes, I cannot wait to work with them again next year in fifth grade drama!
5th Grade Drama Elective:
This quarter has been quite busy for fifth grade drama students as our spring production Alice in Wonderland premieres on Thursday, May 14th. This adapted version of Lewis Carroll’s classic story is extremely charming and will provide excellent entertainment for all audience members. The performance will serve as a final farewell for fifth graders as they prepare to move up to middle school. Specific information pertaining to this production will be disclosed at a later date.
