Welcome back to another year at J Wallace James. I look forward to working with your child this year.

Important--
-Sign papers go home every Tuesday. Please make sure to sign them and return them on every Wednesday.  

                   January 5-9

Reading/Writing/ELA--This week be using fix-up strategies to assist comprehension. We will use various strategies to decode unfammiliar words in texts and make critical comparisons across texts. We will be working on our rough drafts for the Social Studies Fair. The students will proofread their work and correct errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. This weeks vocabulary words are: environment, niche, camouflage, transparent, conserve, depth, beneath, dependent, scavenge, and endangered.
    -The students will have a vocabulary and comprehension test on Friday.
    -Please make sure the students are reading for 20 minutes every night and completing their reading logs.    

Science--This is a social studies week.

Social Studies--The students will identify instances of both cooperation and conflict between Indians and European settlers. They will learn about the impact of human action on the physical environment of early America. They will also explain and give examples of how Native Americans and Europeans adapted to living in a particular North American environment.

They will not have a test this week.

Math- The students will compare and estimate measurements between the US and metric systems in terms of common reference points. They will select appropriate units of measurement and convert units. Later in the week, they will estimate, measure, and compare perimeter and measure circumference.

-The students will have a test this week.
