Merriam-Webster Student's Online Dictionary Resource This is a wonderful site that contains a number of interactive word games for the students to play, as well as providing an online dictionary, thesaurus, and rhyming dictionary.
Welcome 5th grade Aviator parents and students.
Below you will find a tentative schedule of the events taking place in our classroom this week. Based upon the needs of the students, the schedule may change. The plans below represent the goals we have in each area. I will update the schedule as needed.

Classroom procedures and expectations are discussed, explained, and modeled as needed. Students will create a procedure study guide. A quiz will be given, and I will post a date when students will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the procedures (quiz). Students will take part in activities that will help them get acquainted with one another, as well as with me! I am looking forward to spending this time getting to know our Aviators.

Students will be given what I like to refer to as an "All About Me Bag." I will model for the students the correct procedures concerning their first assignment! A rubric (scoring guide) will be sent home that provides students with an outline of the assignment's expectations. All materials given to students will be thoroughly modeled, so that every student will be able to complete the assignment. Students will present their bags on one of two days (Monday or Tuesday) next week. Dates will be assigned randomly.

Quick Write will be modeled, and students will have an opportunity to shine!
Students will practice using a group of editing symbols. The students and I will use these symbols all year to communicate writing expectations. Students will create an editing symbol study guide. An editing symbol identification quiz and an editing symbol application quiz will be given. Those dates will be announced when students demonstrate their understanding of the editing concepts in the classroom.

FRIDAY: WRITING

I will model for students their first writing assignment, "I Am From" poem/form writing. The poem allows students to express who they are by describing what makes them unique. I will model for the students how to create the poem, and I will discuss the rubric(scoring guide) for the project. The assignment will be completed in class.

In writing next week we will continue with using editing symbols. We will also brainstorm as a class ideas(6 Trait) for the "I Am From" poem. Writing conferences will be held as students work on their writing pieces.
