Structures and Systems of the Earth April 21, 2008

Dear Parents:
In science, we aspire to develop scientifically informed, caring, and responsible individuals who can think critically and make informed choices about themselves, the environment, and society.

Over the next few weeks, students will be learning how scientists use critical thinking, careful observation, and measurement to conduct experiments. The big ideas in this unit are a compound is a substance that can be separated into simpler substances only by chemical change.  A molecule is a discrete, electrically neutral particle made of smaller particles, atoms, that are bonded together.  Compounds that consist of molecules are called molecular compounds (the molecures form when atams share electrons).  Not all compounds consist of molecules.  Ionic compounds are made up of ions (ion atoms having positive or negative charge).
