Requirements for Instrumental Music

The Student MUST demonstrate knowledge of the following in order to receive a semester’s credit for band.

1. Participation:   This includes playing at ALL rehearsals, arriving to class on time and having all necessary equipment, music and music stand ready to play.  The student will have at all times an instrument in playing condition, music and method book and will be ready to play on time.  Participation is defined as playing when instructed for the entire class time.  Absences, late arrivals and non-participation in class count off participation points..  Participation points may be made up by writing the participation and/or tardy policy AND getting a parent/guardian signature.  Participation points are a weekly grade.

Tardy Policy:  The student will arrive at the appointed start time of class and be set up ready to play with chair, stand, music and instrument TWO minutes after start of class.

2.  Behavior:   Includes respect for all teachers, adults, students and their property. The student will behave in a manner that is helpful to effective instruction. Non-effective behavior includes refusal to sit in assigned area, excessive talking, playing without permission, rude bodily functions, shouting, throwing objects, eating, drinking, and/or chewing gum during instruction, rehearsals, and performances.  Students will be told once their behavior is unacceptable.  On the second offense they will lose their behavior points. Continued offenses may result in detention or referral.  Behavior points may be made up by writing the behavior notice AND getting a parent/guardian signature.   Behavior points are a weekly grade.
Detention and referrals are automatic reduction of behavior points and may not be made up.

3. Exams:   Exams consist of playing and written exams in order to demonstrate a general knowledge of musical terms and technical ability as related to the student’s age level.  This includes posture and intonation or playing in tune with a good tone quality.  Students missing an exam will receive an F until it is made up.  Failure to make up an exam one week before the end of a term the exam will be recorded as an F.  Any student receiving a D or F on an exam may make up their exam. Playing and written exams can be made up after school at an appointed time.

4. Journals:  Journals are a requirement of the MYP prpgram and must be kept and turned in.  Journals will be accepted late with one grade penalty.

5.  Performances:   Performance classes are expected to perform and are required.   The student will attend and perform at ALL school concerts, performances and contests.  This includes dress rehearsals.  A dress rehearsal is any rehearsal called that is not during regular scheduled class time. The Tulsa Public School’s policy is at least a one grade reduction for each missed performance. Performances are a one-time event and are unable to be made up.
