Welcome to Ms. Helmke's Class!


In our first unit we will be learning about superlative and comparative adjectives and how to use context clues. We will also read the stories For Pete's Snake and The Tell-Tale Heart.


Assignments:


  • Wednesday, Aug. 28 - Adjectives and Prefix worksheet (Except 8-6)


  • Thursday, Aug. 29 - Pages 85 and 86 over comparative and superlative adjectives.

  • Friday, Aug. 30 - Bellwork due!


  • Tuesday, Sept. 4 - Context Clues packet (Homework if not finished)

  • Thursday, Sept. 6 - Tell-Tale Heart poster. Must create a movie poster with the title of the story, the author's name and a drawing of a scene or character from the story. For more info about Edgar Allan Poe, click here


  • Friday Sept. 7 - Bellwork due!

  • Monday, Sept. 10 - Review for test on Thursday and Friday.


  • Tuesday, Sept. 11 - Gates Testing

  • Wednesday, Sept. 12 - Gates testing


  • Thursday, Sept. 13 - Gates testing

  • Friday, Sept. 14 - Test over context clues, comparatvie and superlative adjectives, For Pete's Snake and The Tell-Tale Heart.


  • Monday, Sept. 17 - Read "Broken Chain" on page 29 and "Oranges" on page 37. Answered questions 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, on page 38 and wrote a 5 sentence summary on the story.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 18 - Benchmark 1


  • Wednesday, Sept. 19 - Checked out a book from the library. Students need to bring the book to class every day. Discussed previewing and how to preview a book to make predictions.

  • Thursday, Sept. 20 - Read "Broken Chain" on page 29 and "Oranges" on page 37. Answered questions 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, on page 38 and worksheet 39 (Boys in 8-5 and 8-6) Read "Treasure Island" and discussed conflict, plot, setting and mood. Worksheet 131 and 134 for homework (Girls in 8-7 and 8-8).


  • Friday, Sept. 21 - Read "Broken Chain" in 8-5 and "Treasure Island" in 8-6. Read "Fighting For my Future" in 8-7 and 8-8. Homework for 8-7 and 8-8 is to write a paragraph describing a time you have stood up for something you believe in and write a 10 line poem describing what it feels like to be a "bird in a cage."

  • Monday, Sept. 24 - Make-up work day


  • Tuesday, Sept 25 - Finished "Broken Chain" in 8-5. Read "Fighting for my Future" in 8-6. Homework in 8-6 is to write a paragraph describing a time you have stood up for something you believe in and write a 10 line poem describing what it feels like to be a "bird in a cage." 8-7 and 8-8 began reading "The Diary of Anne Frank."

  • Wednesday, Sept. 26 - 8-5 will have a worksheet on "Broken Chain" and will begin reading "Treasure Island." 8-6 will begin reading the "Diary of Anne Frank." 8-7 and 8-8 will continue reading "The Diary of Anne Frank." 8-7 and 8-8 will have a worksheet over the story for homework.


    • Monday, Nov. 5 - Today we are going over personal pronouns. The students in 8-6, 8-7, and 8-8 will start questions 1-25. If they do not finish they must take it home for homework. Students in 8-5 will be learning how to summarize and paraphrase passages. There will not be homework in 8-5.
