The critics agree…… “Mayo’s Diner” receives FIVE STARS!!!  Everyone had a great time at the Diner and it was also a fantastic way to practice math in a real-life situation.  A very special thank you goes to our wonderful kitchen staff!  Also, thank you to everyone for bringing in our supplies.  We could not have had a Diner without you!

Coming Soon:

The book fair will be November 12th-21st.  This is a great time to stock up on holiday gifts and reading material!

Remember…. We WILL be in school on the 24th and 25th!  However, Tuesday the 25th is an early release day at 1:30.  Also, I am so excited because I will actually NOT be at school those days!  Ha!  Ha! Actually, we will be flying to Philadelphia and New York City to have a Thanksgiving vacation.  We have never been, so we are really looking forward to the trip.  If you need to leave a message  for your child, the best way is to contact the office.  I won’t be on my email :).

The Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for Christian Community Action (CCA) is November 17th– 21st.  Volunteers will collect your turkeys in the morning drop-off line or you can call for pick-up.

What we are learning this week:

Reading: This week we will be reading “Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving.”  It is a fun story about a class that saves a group of turkeys on the Turkey farm.  We will write a sequel to the story and then make our own disguised turkeys.  We will not have a reading comprehension quiz!  Our reading skill for this week is to understand Main Ideas and Details.  We will take our comprehension Test on Thursday.

Math:  This week we will start to understand and memorize multiplication fact sets.  This week we will cover the 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and possibly 10’s.  To learn our facts, we have created a multiplication folder.  Inside is a page for each fact set that covers the skip counting pattern, number sentences, a T-chart, and space to write a word problem.  If you have not done so already, please make sure that your child has a set of multiplication and division flash cards.  They are especially handy for car trips!

Science: Our new unit for this six weeks is to learn about light and the eyes.  This is a fun unit because we conduct several experiments, try some unusual optical illusions, and even witness a sheep’s eye dissection!

Social Studies: This week we will discuss the First Thanksgiving.  We will participate in a webquest and compare and contrast our current Thanksgiving traditions.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I am truly so thankful to have such a wonderful group of students and parents.  Take care!

Missy

Reminders:

* My conference time is from 2:00-2:50.  The best way to get a hold of me is through email.  Also, I do NOT recommend using the link from schoolnotes to my email.  Sometimes the email will take a while to get to me!

* Spelling pre-test lists should be coming home in the green folder every Monday.  They should be studied nightly to prepare for Friday’s quiz.

* Planners should be checked and signed off on nightly.  Items that have a checkmark are completed.  Items that are highlighted need to be done and returned to school the next day.  For the most part, items in the planner are work that could have been completed in class.  Sometimes a student just needs a little extra time to finish it. (Planners do not come home on Fridays.)

* On Tuesdays, a blue folder is sent home with a behavior chart and graded work/flyers.  Each Tuesday, please initial the behavior chart and send the blue folder back to school.

* Reading quizzes from stories out of our reader are on Fridays.  Although we read the story throughout the week, reading books should be brought home on Thursdays so that the story can be re-read.  This can count for the expected 20 minutes of reading each evening.  Also, the reading quiz is open book so that everyone has an opportunity for a 100%.

*Homework packets are given out each Monday and due back on Friday.  Please sign each section of the cover page to verify that the work has been completed.
