Dear Parents,

Have you heard about our BIG news? Our class won the 100% PTA membership award! We celebrated with cupcakes last week. One of the prizes was $75.00 of free books from Scholastic Book Fair. Because of this generous gift I will not be placing "books for our class" in my basket. It would please me if your child takes that money and buys a book for themselves. Finding an author or series that they enjoy is crucial to the love of reading. I'll be anxious to hear about all the great books we are reading.

One of the other prizes was $100.00 cash! Our class voted to buy board games for the class. I have a list of favorites. (It was so much fun voting on what to spend the money on. We used it as an example of a democratic class.)

Math:
We are working very hard! We have started multiplication, and continue to practice our basic facts for addition.

Reading:
Molly's Pilgrim will be our story for the week. We will be learning about the differences in cultures and how living together creates a rich and industrious society.

Grammar:
Sensory Writing will be the writing topic of the week. We will be writing about what we see, hear, touch, feel, and taste during the holidays. Students will meet in groups to combine their ideas and listen to each others writing. (Our Projects will be out in the hall, stop by and take a look...later in the week)

Social Studies:
This will be our last week in government. Your child will be bringing home their social studies book to review for their quiz on Friday. (Unit 6 in the Social Studies Book)

Science:
We are working with Light. What a perfect time of year to talk about lights!

Thank you for not sending your children to school with fevers and upset stomachs. Because of your diligence we have been able to keep "THE" virus at bay! (LISD policy states that children are to remain out of the classroom until 24 hours after their symptoms have disapated.)

A Few Reminders:

1. Bookfair continues through the 21st
2. Grandparents lunch is Monday, November 24th
3. The 25th is early release (1:30)

Now for the part I didn't want to write! We are still having difficulty remembering to write our name on assignments. Therefore I will be taking off 10 points for an orphan assignment. This sounds severe, but writing your name on work is just a basic necessity.
Late work will be 11 points. This is such an important lesson. You know I've said it a million times, "Let them learn here. Harvard has never asked for a third grade transcript!" It's a fact of life that grades are based on personality as well as academic knowledge.

With that said...I wish all of you a wonderful weekend. I'm off to Target to do a little shopping!
Thanks again for ALL of your support!

Sincerely,
Cindy Peterson
