Welcome to Health and Physical Education
at Wellington Elementary
Physical Education is a vital part of a child’s educational endeavor. It is our desire for the student to choose and stay physically fit for a lifetime. Emphasis is on lifetime activities. Major content areas include motor and manipulative skills, rhythmic activities, gymnastics, physical fitness skills, and lead-up games related to individual and team sports.
Your support is an important part of your child’s education. Their safety is our top priority. Please help remind students to wear the following:
1) Running/Tennis shoes are needed for safety and assured success. No open-toe, backless, high platform, strapped-back tennis shoes, flip-flops, or crocs please! Also: especially for boys-All tennis shoes must be properly tied. Tucking in loosely fit laces only causes shoes to “fly” off feet and risk injury to your child as well as others.
2) Encourage your child to wear comfortable, “moveable” clothes. Socks are highly encouraged with their shoes.
3) If a dress or skirt must be worn on a PE day, please have your child wear shorts underneath.
4) Your child MAY NOT participate in activities if his/her clothing and shoes are not appropriate or may pose a risk of injury.
If your child does not wear tennis shoes or proper clothing to PE, a note will be sent home. This note must be signed by you, the parent, and returned to the PE teacher the next day. A suggestion may be to keep an extra pair of tennis shoes in your child’s locker at school or simply wear tennis shoes everyday.
This year Wellington Elementary will have a seven day rotation for specials. The students will have PE twice during this rotation. “Clap My Tiny Paws” is a way for you and your child to remember which fine arts class you have each day.
C= Creative Dramatics
L= Library
A= Art
P= P.E.
M= Music
T= Technology
P= P.E.
Each student will receive two grades for physical education; one for participation (performance) and the other for behavior.
If a child is ill, we request a written note from a parent/guardian that briefly explains the nature of the illness/injury. If a lower level of activity is appropriate, we will modify the day’s activity. If your child is unable to participate at any level, then your child will go to the “Info Center” where he/she may choose from a variety of books and complete a “Sports Writer” form. If a child needs to miss MORE THAN 1 PE CLASS, a note from a physician is required so we are aware and may follow the medical instructions.
Your child will have two PE teachers this year, Coach Teresa Kenney and Coach Susan Tyner. We have both coached and taught for a number of years. We look forward to having your child in our PE program.
If you should have any questions please call the school at 469-713-5989.
Thank you for sharing your child with us this year.
Explanation of Fine Arts Grading Scale:
In fine arts, students will receive a grade of 1, 2, or 3.
To help you understand their score better, keep in mind the following guidelines:
3=EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS…this score shows that the student is doing above and beyond what is expected, or they are working above grade level. It could also show extraordinary effort.
2=MEETING EXPECTATIONS…this score shows that the student is doing exactly what they should be doing, and they are meeting the requirements of the teacher and the skills being taught in class.
1=BELOW EXPECTATIONS…this score shows concern by the teacher that the student is not at grade level, not following guidelines taught in class, or is failing to progress at a steady rate.
Hopefully, understanding these scores will help you to get a picture of your child’s growth in areas of PE, ART, MUSIC, DRAMA, AND, TECHNOLOGY.
FITNESSGRAM
Senate Bill 530 requires Texas schools to assess students progress during the Fall. It states that students must participate in moderate to vigorous daily physical activity for 30 minutes or 135 minutes a week. At Wellington, students will receive 90 minutes of PE per week, and the classroom teacher will schedule and conduct the remaining 45 minutes of physical activity needed to meet this requirement. The Bill also states that school districts will be required to assess the physical fitness of students in grades 3-12. The assessment instrument will incorporate standards relating to aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Elementary students in LISD will be given the following tests:
• Body Mass Index- The BMI provides an indication of the appropriateness of a child’s weight relative to height. Body mass index is determined by the following formula:
weight (kg) / height² (m)
• Shoulder Stretch- The shoulder stretch is a simple test of upper arm and shoulder girdle flexibility. Students must be able to touch the fingertips together behind the back reaching over the shoulder and under the elbow.
• Trunk Lift- Students must lift the upper body off the floor using the muscles of the back and hold the position to allow for the measurement. The maximum score on this test is 12 inches.
• Curl-Ups- Students must complete as many curl-ups as possible at a specified pace. This test measures strength and endurance of the abdominal muscles.
• Push-Ups- Students must complete as many 90° push-ups as possible at a rhythmic pace. This test measures strength and endurance of the muscles in the upper body.
• PACER- (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) The objective is to run as long a possible back and forth across a 20-meter space at a specified pace that gets faster each minute.
Fitnessgram uses criterion-referenced standards to evaluate fitness performance. Performance is classified in two general areas: HEALTHY FITNESS ZONE (HFZ) and the “NEEDS IMPROVEMENT” zone. Attaining the HFZ for a test indicates that the child has a sufficient fitness level to provide important health benefits. The “NEEDS IMPROVEMENT” zone should be interpreted as an indication that the child may be at risk if that level of fitness stays the same over time. Attached, Table 9.1 provides expectation standards for boys, and Table 9.2 provides expectation standards for girls.
We will begin testing 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students during the Fall in their regularly scheduled P.E. classes. We will test for several weeks. We have encouraged students to wear sports attire and tennis shoes throughout the testing process. When assessments are complete, we will be sending home student reports so that you and your child can evaluate his/her performance on the Fitnessgram test.
