Students learn best in different ways. The three common learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Students are able to chose and show me which way they learn best. In place of traditional testing, students will be able to substitute one of the following projects in place of written tests:
Song - Minimum 20 lines, chorus or stanza optional.
Power Point - Minimum 10 slides, on CD or printed out.
Poster - Design and decoration choices unlimited.
Brochure - Foldable choices are unlimited, must include title, vocabulary, what/when/where/why, effects, and a timeline.
***TEXAS HISTORY BOOK CLUB***
Students may receive extra credit for Mr. Mashburn, Ms. Conrad, and Ms. Hendrix by reading a pre-approved Texas history book from any library or personal collection.
***EXTRA CREDIT***
Mr. Mashburn offers extra credit every single week through the Lone Star Legends workbook. Each student has been issued their own workbook to keep at home. Every Monday I assign a Texas Legend from the corresponding chapter in the workbook. The assignment is due by the end of the day on Friday.
***MASHBURN TEACHING PHILOSOPHY***
I believe there are two things that I must do to be an effective teacher. INTERACT and explain WHY. Every single day I must acknowledge each student's existence. This can be a simple hello, a disciplinary correction, or an academic question. My students will never feel like a number. No one will go unnoticed.
Students are clever and often try to get me to do the work for them. If a student asks me how to spell a word I tell them to look it up in the dictionary. If they ask me what page something is on I tell them to use the table of contents. It is their job to find out the who, what, when, and where of history. It is my job to explain the WHY. Why historical figures did what they did and why the students are doing the activities that I have selected.
