Commentary:  Standardized Dress

As I listened to many of the parents address the PTA meeting last night, I realized that there is a very basic fallacy running through their arguments.  That is, many of the parents cannot get past the fact that ‘the clothes do not make the man’, a lesson learned by society long ago.

Instead of focusing so heavily on clothes to express individuality, a word often used too often, parents should realize that there are many more positive ways to express a person’s self-worth and worth.  So many of these kids are skilled artists, have musical talent, or are just plain smart.  Foster that.  Make them better people, better members of society.  Participate in school activities.  Start new ones.

Focusing on the extrinsic, the most fleeting of characteristics, is doing the child a disservice now and for their future.  When that is gone, and almost surely it will be, it is their intrinsic skills – their self reliance, their intelligence, their ability to explore and learn, that will carry them through the day.  Start that now.  Allow them to focus on that and to grow.

But I do agree that the colors could be better.  Perhaps the parents were correct that one standard set would be better for all.

As we continue to demolish our planet, you must realize that our children and grandchildren will grow up in a world that will not be nearly as good as the one that we grew up in.  Things are changing, and not for the better.  The Golden Age is gone.  What good will jeans and a t-shirt do them then?
