LEAP NEWS
October, 2008

The year is off to a great start and we are delving deep into our subjects.

Gr. 2 is currently studying insects. While learning about these interesting arthropods, we are also learning how to do basic note taking and diagramming of important information.  We are also working on money skills and logic.

Third grade teams are traveling the world on a Caravan.  They can move ahead by bringing artifacts from other countries (or pictures of things if they are too delicate) to school to share on Thursdays.  They are also doing various research projects such as country reports, making state brochures, and geography and almanac activities as they learn to use many types of sources for research.

Gr. 4  are detectives trying to solve a chocolate recipe theft from “A Chocolate Caper” simulation.  They are using their logic, decoding skills, and questioning strategies to solve the case.  Chasing Vermeer is a mystery novel that we are also reading.  They are also writing their own creative mystery stories.

Gr. 5 students have been reading the novel, Regarding the Fountain. The students wrote short stories using a “play-on-words” format.  They also did mini-research on water conservation and will be presenting posters or power point this week on what they found in their research.  Fifth grade will also be doing daily quotes in their journals this year which helps stimulate their thinking and interpretation of topics as well as improve their writing skills. We will start a Citizenship Unit this week and look at the Election process.

Report Cards will be coming out soon.  Please remember that a 3 (on the 1-5 scale) is a good grade. Students must go above and beyond in order to obtain a 4 or 5.

King Tut Exhibit opens in Dallas on October 3rd.  I hope you and your family can find some time to visit this wonderful exhibit.

Also, please show your creativity by participating in PTA Reflections. Contest entries are due by Oct. 29.  Complete details are available on school’s website and in the office.

The next testing for potential LEAP students will begin after October 13.
