Welcome to the 2008-2009 School Year!  It is going to be an exciting year of learning.

Meet the teacher!
My name is Bethany Hayes and I moved to Texas four summers ago from the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area.  This is my eighth year teaching fourth grade. Before becoming a teacher I worked at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Art History from Florida State University and my Master’s Degree in Education from Shenandoah University.  I have been married for nearly nineteen years and have three beautiful daughters.  Grace is 15, Chloe is 11 and Evelyn is 5.
I am looking forward to another great year working with the remarkable staff and students here at Southridge!

What we are studying!

Social Studies
In Social Studies we will begin the year learning about the geography of Texas.  We will be working a great deal with maps and map skill practice.

Math
We are very excited to have brand new Math text books this year.  Please make sure your child's book stays covered and in excellent condition.
We will begin by reviewing place value, and addition and subtraction of larger numbers.  Practice your multiplication and division facts daily to increase speed and recall.

Science
In Science we will begin with the Scientific Process, and Science safety.  We will be doing a lot of hands on investigations that will be recorded in your child's Science Interactive Learning Notebook.  Ask to see it to check out what we've been learning.

Reading/Language Arts
We will begin the year using the textbook to review story elements and introduce new vocabulary.  Later we will begin our novel units beginning with "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing".
Selling packets will be given out each Monday.  Homework will be to write the words on notebook paper in alphabetical order for Monday.  The rest of packet is due on Friday; encourage to use a few minutes each night to make sure it is completed on time.

Reminders
Check your child's planner frequently for notes or Test Alerts.  Each day's homework assignments and important information is copied into the planners.  Likewise, if you have any questions or comments for me you can jot them down in the planner for me to see.  Please remember to ask for and initial your child's Rocket Record each day.
FOUTH GRADE IS AWESOME!

Beth Hayes
