Welcome to another school year! I am looking forward to a great year of music-making with my K-5 students.
Please note the following:
SHOES and CLOTHING should be comfortable and appropriate for physical activity. Movement is a part of each lesson. Students must wear either gym shoes or some "stay on your foot" low-heeled shoe. Wedges, platform soles, flip-flips, or slides/mules are not comfortable or SAFE with the kind of activities we do.
Girls must wear clothing that covers their bodies appropriately for movement activities or sitting/lying on the floor.
RECORDERS: ALL 4th and 5th graders are expected to have their own recorder for use in music class (for sanitary reasons). I WILL HAVE ORDER FORMS AVAILABLE FOR EACH STUDENT THE SECOND WEEK OF SCHOOL; THE COST WILL BE APPROXIMATELY $5.00, DEPENDING ON THE PURCHASE SOURCE.
I will coordinate the recorder orders with the 4th and 5th grade teachers. Please have your cash ready to turn in then. Students will get further information in their first music class.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES: The Southridge Sharps, an instrumental/vocal group open to 4th and 5th graders, will probably meet again on Tuesday afternoons after school until 3:45 p.m.--beginning in late September. This music group performs at Southridge's "Winter Celebration of the Arts" in December.
Music Memory is a team of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders (3 from each grade) who compete in the Elementary UIL competion. It involves the study of selected classical music compositions. NOTE: UIL competition date has been moved back from early November to early January.
***Adults who like to sing to their kids---Great!! It helps if you can "kick it up a notch"..not up in volume (soft/loud), but up in pitch (high/low). We work in class to develop a high, light singing voice ("a girl's voice", as one of my male students explained). Adults tend to talk/sing in lower, heavier voices; this makes it hard for some students to move from a "speaking" voice to a "singing" voice. So,it's a big help if your in-the-car, in-the-shower, and at-home singing voice is as high and pure as you can make it.
