Welcome to Mr. Robinson's class!!! Please read over my school notes page carefully. I have lots of updates.
As you know, I have been unable to update my notes for a couple of weeks. Thankfully the glitch is fixed and I am back on line. Thank you for your patience!
We had several fantastic veterans speak to us on Veteran's Day. Thank you Mr. Campbell, Mr. Pearce, Mr. Scott, and Mr. Meek! We appreciate your service to our country and the time you spent with us in class.
Please email me if there is anything I can do to help your child be more successful. This is a huge growth year for 4th graders! They will learn so many new things. The biggest thing they will learn is how to take responsibility for themselves in the classroom.

Writing Mechanics: The TAKS benchmark was a success! The students showed they had the "right stuff" and gave it their all!
Students will have a mini-lesson on mechanics followed by a mechanics test on Thursday's.
"Work extra hard on the beginning of your story, so it snares readers instantly. And know how you're going to end your story before you start writing; without a sense of direction, you can get lost in the middle."
--Joan Lowery Nixon

-Spelling- I spoke to the parent's about our spelling program during our parent orientation. It will be largely completed at home. Students will receive the spelling packet on Friday and it will be due the following Friday just before they take their test. Tests will count 2 grades and the spell checks (spelling packets) will count as 1 grade.
The words will be posted on my website "flashcards". Use the flashcards to study the words at home. Your child MUST study their words at home in order to be successful on the weekly test.

Reading Counts: Reading Counts started this week! I will pay a dollar a point, so get busy reading, and take those tests!
website, there is a link called Reading Counts Quiz list. The link has a current list of all the Reading Counts books. It is a PDF file so if you click on Search you can search for specific words.
http://www.lisd.net/schools/heritage/index.htm
We will read enough RC books in class to earn 100 points, so all your child needs to do is take those tests once the book study is completed. Here is a list of books we will read in class:
War with Grandpa
Stone Fox
The Whipping Boy
Tale of Despereaux (we are currently reading)
Boy in the Girls Bathroom
Maude March
Shoeshine Girl
Ballet of the Elephants
Blue Ghost
The Greatest Skating Race
On the Road
Where the Red Fern Grows
The Summer of the Swan
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
The Reading Counts goal for the year: 100 points
As students pass Reading Counts tests they earn points. Students earning 100+ Reading Counts points will receive an award at the end of the year!

Repechage Papers-
Parents, If your child receives a paper with a grade below 70, the student will have the opportunity to correct it (on a separate sheet of paper), have his/her parent sign it, and return it for a grade of 70. All graded papers are sent home in "Thursday mail"; all repechage must be corrected, signed by a parent, and returned by Friday, the next day, to receive a 70.

Reading:
Your child will have Ms. Dougan for reading, but I will read a chapter book to them at the end of each day. We finished "Tale of Despereaux" in our homeroom and will start The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, also by Kate DiCamillo.
-Six Steps for Success - Students will learn six steps to reading success. They will be required to follow the steps. They will be graded on how well they follow the steps as well as how well they do on the reading assignment.

Social Studies: Explorers
Don't foreget about the Extra Credit opportunity due by the end of each six weeks. What is it? Research one of the topics in Unit 1 and share what you have learned with the rest of the class. You must hand write or type at least 1/2 page of information about the topic, and it must be written in your own words. (You may ALSO submit facts you found on the internet, or in books, in addition to your typed or hand written paper.)
*******************************
Math: Division Meaning
-Basic Facts Practice at home is key. Kids, ask your parents to quiz you at home on your multiplication facts. Multiplication is a skill that should have been learned in 3rd grade. Study your multiplication facts!!!! It is critical to your success that you know your basic multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts by the end of the 1st six weeks!
Students may have homework as much as 3 nights a week. It all depends on how well they are using their time in class. They will not have it on Friday unless they fail to complete their work in class.

Science: See Mrs. Dougan's notes.
