Good afternoon!  I hope everyone enjoyed their "Swine Flu Vacation"!  Hahaha!  It was sure nice to be home for those three days, but boy are the kids having summer fever now!  Let's be sure and remind them that we still have four weeks to go!!!!

Just a few reminders of some new dates!

May 11:  Final Copy of Report was due!  Thank you!  The reports look great!

May 15:  Final project-presentation boards are due!  I cannot wait to see them!  I know the kids have worked hard!

May 22:  Possible day for Virtual Zoo.  I need to check with the office to see if anything else is going on that day!  I will let you know very soon!

May 21:  Rescheduled field trip to Ft. Worth Stock Yards!

Here is a peek at our week:

Spelling:  I promised the kids I would write you a note about Spelling!  :)  We will no longer be doing the Tampa Reads program that we have been doing.  Our district is going with a new program based on "Words Their Way"-a Word study, phonics, vocabulary and spelling instructional program.  I am going to be "trying it out" with the kids for the next few weeks so there will be activities I am doing with them during the week.  THERE WILL BE NO MORE SPELLING TESTS THIS YEAR!!!!!  Instead, I am going to be doing word sorts, games and word studies with the kids in class.  The focus will be on spelling rules and patterns.  I think the kids will welcome the break and really enjoy the program!

Reading:  We read "In the Days of King Adobe" in our reading book.  We are making a comic strip to retell the story and talking about lessons learned or morals to stories in fables and folktales.  We will read other fables/folktales and discuss.  We will also discuss IDIOMS as those are expressed in many folktales!

Social Studies:  We are working on our Texas ABC books to review all we have learned about Texas this year!  The kids are working really hard on these and I think they are going to turn out really cute!

Thanks and have a wonderful week!

Sharon Shiver
