Nov.10-14, 2008

Good evening!  I have some exciting news!  I picked up my projector and my document camera for my computer today!  I am so excited!  We will be able to use the SmartBoard now!  Technology is wonderful (when it works-LOL)!

Tomorrow is our Veteran's Day Assembly in the gym at 8:15-9:00.

I will be sending home some graded compositions tomorrow.  Please be aware that I am really starting to push the kids with their writing.  Scores are a lot lower than you are used to.  I have started using the TAKS rubric that the state uses to score the writing compositions with.  I have gone over this rubric with the students.  They have now seen examples of score point 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Most of the papers were 2's.  We have a lot of work to do for the March TAKS Writing test!  Please be reassured that the scores/grades usually come up.

We will have Mini-Mall this Friday since it is the end of the six weeks.  The kids had a BLAST last six weeks with this!

We could use some new items for our TREASURE BOX!  Thank you in advance!  :)

Here is a peek at our week:

Spelling:  No Spelling this week-end of the six weeks

Reading:  continuing with Charlotte's Web-have started Guided Reading groups!  We will read and discuss and work on reading strategies for Ch. 3-6 or 7 this week (depending on how far we get).

Social Studies:  Finishing Native Americans Unit Ch. 3-Final Project for this unit is due Wednesday, Nov. 12.  The students were asked to pick two tribes, complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two tribes, write a paragraph about how these two tribes are alike and a paragraph about how they are different.  Then they are to create an acrostic poem over each of the two tribes.  We began working on this last Thursday and had class time on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.  After tomorrow in class, it will be homework.  It is due on Wed., Nov. 12.   At that time, we will begin Ch. 4-Lesson 1 on Explorers in Texas.

Writing:  Working on Comma Rules.  This helps with sentence structure, sentence combining and editing. We will continue to work on writing compositions and techniques to stretch and improve their writing.

Have a wonderful week!

Sharon Shiver
