Dear Parents,
This syllabus (for the 4th Six Weeks) is provided as a guide so that you and your child are aware of what is expected in my 8th Grade Science Class. Students will learn:

Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy
4th six weeks syllabus for 8th Grade Science (Jan 21, 2009))
Mr. Broadnax/ Mr. Mazarello
Week 1
•    Vocabulary: abiotic, biotic, cell, organism, organism, organelle, population, tissue, organ, system, unicellular, multi-cellular.
•    Explain that all living things are made of cell(s) and describe functions of cell organelles. Compare and contrast animal cells and plant cells.
•    Differentiate the levels of organization within he human body: tissues, organs, and organ systems.
Week  2
•    Vocabulary: interdependence, function, equilibrium, homeostasis, negative feedback, hormone, diffusion, turgor pressure, positive feedback
•    Review the systems of the human body and describe their structures and functions. Analyze interactions of the human body and describe how body systems work together to carry out important life functions.
•    Explain how positive and negative feedback mechanisms help maintain homeostasis in the body and turgor pressure in plants.
•    To review the systems of the human body, have students illustrate each system of the human body, include main organs, and the function of each system.
Week 3
•    Investigate and report on a simple feedback mechanisms such as the thermostat in a home and compare it to the body’s negative feedback systems such as glucose levels in blood, water balance, body temperature, or turgor pressure in plants.
•    Accountable Talk: How does an air conditioning and heating thermostat relate to the body’s hypothalamus gland?
•    Human Body Regulation, Students will view videos and complete interactive simulations to determine how the human body regulates temperature and how fevers fights infections.
•    Students explore and evaluate the diffusion of water through a membrane as it relates to turgor pressure in Honey, I Shrunk the Carrot.
•    Students investigate the effects of exercise on the human body by carrying out simple exploratory exercises such as running in place, climbing stairs, completing push- ups etc. Students monitor and record temperature, heart rate and other observed changes such as sweating or chills.
Week 4
•    Vocabulary: inherited, acquired, trait, DNA, nucleus, chromosome, gene, allele, Gregory Mendel, genotype, hybrid, phenotype, dominant, recessive, probability, Punnett Square, selective breeding
•    Differentiate between acquired traits and inherited traits.
•    Predict, complete, and analyze genetic crosses using Punnett Squares, defining and describing dominant and recessive traits, genotype, and phenotype.
•    Students carry out Punnett Square crosses to predict possible outcomes of various combinations of inherited characteristics.
Week 5
•    Vocabulary: evolution, natural selection, mutation, adaptive radiation, extinction, species, organic evolution, adaptation
•    Explain how a changing environment may impact the evolution of a certain species. Describe the process of natural selection.
•    Analyze the degrees to which human or natural events have impacted the survival of some species.
•    Discuss the recovery process of some organisms that were once on the brink of extinction.
•    Explain how some organisms adapt to new climates.
Week 6
•    Vocabulary: biotic, abiotic, community, niche, symbiosis, parasitism, mutualism, predator, prey, herbivore, carnivore, scavenger, biome, climate, competition, succession, commensalism, species, primary succession, secondary succession, climax community, decomposer
•    Analyze and classify the interactions between biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem.
•    Examine the symbiotic relationships within an environment, such as mutualism and parasitism.
•    Rationalize that different environments can support different varieties of organisms.
•    Observe and illustrate changes that occur in ecosystems due to ecological succession.
